Therefore, (the Buddha) listens and proclaims. It is said in the scriptures. The teaching of the ultimate truth arises from skillful means, relying on conventional truth to reveal the ultimate. By understanding it, one attains the ultimate, which is non-abiding Nirvana. The scriptures say: Without relying on conventional language, one cannot teach the ultimate truth. Without realizing the ultimate truth, one cannot attain liberation. Here, arising from skillful means, the result, what is to be attained, what is to be realized, the object of observation by meditative wisdom, and non-abiding Nirvana are all different names. Therefore, those who do not understand the distinction between these two truths, like the Mind-Only school, enter the wrong path created by their own erroneous conceptualizations. They will go against the intention of the Blessed One. The scriptures say: Those who do not understand the distinction between these two truths do not understand the profound reality of the Buddha's teachings. It is said in the scriptures. The way to distinguish the two truths is explained in detail by quoting twelve verses and one footnote from the Arya's "Definitive Explanation of the Truth of Reality." The meaning of that scripture is: It refutes the establishment of the two truths by the realists and the Svātantrika school, and accurately proclaims the distinction between the two truths as merely following others, as stated by the Prāsaṅgika school. All phenomena are devoid of inherent existence and free from elaboration in both truths. When establishing conventional truth in the conventional world, it does not conform to the tenets of philosophical schools, but rather establishes the six realms of beings, high and low, and so on, as conventional truth, according to what is commonly said in the world. Secondly, it is divided into two: avoiding contradiction with conventional truth and avoiding contradiction with scriptures. The first is divided into three: the way of acknowledging due to the needs of conventional truth, the way of not acknowledging if it is not seen by the world, and the way of not being able to deny conventional truth in the world. The first is: Just as you think that others are real, I have not acknowledged conventional truth either. For the sake of the result, although these do not exist, I say they do, I say this in front of the world. The Mind-Only school says: You Madhyamikas, disregarding our views, use reason to refute others.

Moreover, you Madhyamikas are also intolerable. If the reasoning of you Madhyamikas that refutes self and other is turned around to refute the conventional truth that you yourselves acknowledge, what will you do? It is like a thief who steals property accumulated from beginningless time, and then the loser makes friends with the thief and gives him food mixed with poison, and then snatches it back and doesn't give it to him, then the thief will be happy. We Madhyamikas very much want to analyze and refute the conventional truth as it is known in the world with the reasoning of Madhyamika. Just as you establish it by analyzing with the reasoning of other-dependence, the conventional truth (234a) is not established by analysis, but is established on the level of unanalyzed common consent. This shows that just as you think that the object of other-dependence is the object of realization of the wisdom of the noble ones, the conventional is not taken by us Madhyamikas as our own and acknowledged in our own system. So how should the arrangement of the conventional be made? For the sake of the fruit or need of leading the world, these conventions, although they do not exist in reality, exist only because they are known only to the world, so I speak only on the level of the world. What is said after that is for the purpose of reversing the idea that conventional dharmas are truly established. Therefore, the Blessed One said, "I argue with the world, but I do not argue with the world. Whatever the world thinks exists, I also think exists; whatever the world thinks does not exist, I also think does not exist." As the realists establish the ultimate truth as truly established, the Madhyamikas do not establish the conventional truth in their own system. Therefore, the view that the lower and lower ultimate truths are all the higher and higher conventions, and the way the Svatantrikas such as Lekden establish the conventional, and the views of the Yogachara Madhyamika Shantarakshita and others, and the view of some Tibetans that there is a nominal truth in the view of the Madhyamika Prasangika, are all harmful. In short, the appearance of hairs and so on to those with cataracts is not nominally existent to those without cataracts (234b), but in order to reverse the belief in the reality of the hairs of those with cataracts, although hairs appear, they have no nature.
