That is what is considered. It is thus established as it appears. Moreover, it seems that the two truths are separately considered based on the power of establishment that each has posited for the dependent arising as conceived by the truly existent phenomena, and the dependent arising as conceived by the falsely existent phenomena. The apprehended aspect as conceived by the truly existent phenomena, which has become the nature of consciousness, is the ultimate truth. The apprehended aspect as conceived by the falsely existent phenomena cannot possibly be established as the nature of consciousness. Therefore, it is said that all imputations by aspect consciousness other than the conventional truth are not the ultimate truth. This has been known for a long time, so it is not refuted. In the second (227a), the summary is stated. Refuting the proof of mindfulness. Showing other ways of refutation, there are three points. The first point is: It is not established that it experiences itself. Even if there is no other apprehending another, there is self-awareness, because oneself apprehends oneself. For example, like a lamp illuminating itself. If you say that, it is not established that the dependent arising experiences the dependent arising, because it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself. Just as even a well-trained and skilled axeman cannot ride on his own shoulders. In the second point, there are two points: that the unestablished cannot establish the unestablished, and that even if self-awareness is established, mindfulness is not established. The first point is: If it is established from later mindfulness, then it is said to establish the unestablished. This unestablished is not the establisher. Here, some proponents of the Mind-Only school, like the Sautrāntika view, establish self-awareness and then establish dependent arising as self-experiencing. Like this, all consciousnesses are knowers of both their own nature and the object. For example, fire, from the moment it arises, is self-illuminating and illuminates pots and so on. Sound also reveals both its own nature and the meaning, because it is like that. Therefore, even those who do not accept self-awareness, as the subject, must necessarily accept self-awareness, because if they do not accept it, then the object and the consciousness with the object that experiences the object will not become mindfulness, such as "I saw a form." If it is unestablished, then it will become established, because mindfulness is the experiencer of the object, then consciousness will also not become mindfulness because of experience. Furthermore, if there is no self-awareness, then it will also become that it does not experience itself, and if another experiences it, then it will also lead to infinite faults (227b). Two simultaneous consciousnesses
