If waking up is like all three not existing, then waking up from the sleep of ignorance is the same. In this world, just as in the state of being awake, due to the great sleep of ignorance, there are the three: object, faculty, and consciousness, so long as one has not awakened from the temporary minor sleep of mental events, that dreamer also has those three: object, faculty, and consciousness. Because there is the appearance of being three, and also because there is attachment to the appearance. In the 'Explanation of Mind' it says: 'The state of waking from a dream, has no difference in terms of function. In a dream, just like dreaming, the function is the same, but the nature is non-existent.' Therefore, the Dharma of 'the nature of things is not found,' which was widely taught by the Blessed One and the noble protector Nagarjuna and other earlier Madhyamika teachers, is greatly misinterpreted by later Tibetans who explain the nature of things as having the ability to function. For the nature of things is that which worldly people, under the influence of ignorance, grasp with their innate intelligence as a true phenomenon capable of functioning. To understand it in such a reversed way is a mistaken view, and therefore it must be abandoned. Whoever realizes that all phenomena are like objects in a dream, devoid of function, understands all the phenomena of the two truths, the profound emptiness, the lack of inherent existence, the equality, and that apart from that (211a) like not moving or changing, in conventional truth, the function of dependent origination, like arising and ceasing, can occur in falsehood, deception, and illusion. Such phenomena that can occur in that way are not the true nature of things that truly exist in both truths. Understanding this, the grasping of things as having function is definitely an obscuration of knowledge. Tsongkhapa the Great said that if that were the case, then the way of combining the example and meaning of all phenomena being like dreams and illusions would also be wrong. Moreover, in terms of conventions, by denying causality from the nature of things that have function, one would be holding a wrong view and would inevitably fall into the great abyss of the lower realms. Therefore, the meaning of 'the nature of things is not found' is a unique object to be refuted that no one, neither Chinese nor Tibetan, has been able to clearly express before. That is the...

Only those from my (Tsongkhapa's) lineage can understand the teachings directly spoken through sound, which those without merit, such as the early Madhyamikas of Tibet, cannot comprehend. Therefore, the Madhyamikas who appeared in the Land of Snows (Tibet) before, such as the great master Zhangtang Sagpa, although they became holy beings in terms of conventional bodhicitta, discipline, and generosity, they erred in their understanding and practice of ultimate bodhicitta and Madhyamika, like the Chinese monk Hwashang. Therefore, all wise individuals in the future should not follow that lineage. If they do, the path to liberation and all (211b) knowledge will be forever cut off. This was proclaimed from Yagi Kashmir to the Chinese palace of Dastu (transliteration). Nowadays, the Gelugpas believe that even Jetsun Rendawa, the root guru to whom Tsongkhapa owes the greatest debt, only remained in the early Madhyamika view and practice during his lifetime, and did not generate the unerring Madhyamika view and practice that Shar Tsongkhapa realized. Therefore, the two lineages of Tibetan Madhyamika Prasangika, earlier and later, appear as different traditions, like light and darkness. Therefore, one should study and contemplate the scriptures of Nagarjuna and his spiritual sons, and examine them with an unbiased mind, free from partiality and attachment. Now is the time to follow those who are free from error. Do not be biased towards the lineage favored by one's own clan, or by the prejudice of those who entered the Dharma earlier or later, or by the number of people who have joined the lineage, or by the power, bravery, wealth, and prosperity of those in U-Tsang and Ngari (U-Tsang, now the Tibet Autonomous Region; Ngari Prefecture, now western Tibet Autonomous Region). If you trust that they are free from error and determine that they are the correct side, there is a great danger of falling into a biased view. Therefore, this treatise also does not show that the eighteen elements exist in name even in dreams, but rather shows that whether awake or not, the eighteen elements have no difference between truth and falsehood in reality, but are merely false. Just as the three things in a dream do not exist when one is slightly awake, when one awakens from the great sleep of ignorance, and the Dharmadhatu manifests, the three things that are not defiled by temporary illusions do not exist, just like the three things in a dream. (212a) Therefore, consciousness without an object is also unreasonable. Secondly, it is divided into: the actual refutation, and the defense against its faults.
