Through reasoned analysis, the cause and effect of conventional truth are established as amenable to examination by valid reasoning. To claim, "This is not established," is a fabrication by proponents of substantiality. The Madhyamikas do not establish conventional truth through analysis, for to do so would incur the supreme fault of having to accept phenomena that withstand analysis. In particular, upon analysis, results do not arise from either a destroyed or an undestroyed cause. If results arose from a destroyed cause, then everything would arise from everything. If they arose from an undestroyed cause, then results would not depend on conditions. If one asserts that results arise from a destroyed cause, then later entities would be severed. If one asserts that results arise from an undestroyed cause, then all entities would simultaneously be permanent, for a destroyed entity cannot serve as a cause, and an undestroyed, permanent entity also cannot serve as a cause. Upon such analysis, the relationship of cause and effect (191b) and its basis, etc., can barely be maintained even nominally. This absence of elaborative obfuscation is the unsurpassed excellence of this doctrine. Now, let us discuss how the arguments for considering destruction to be a real entity lack reason. In general, how things are destroyed, how the world and the authors of treatises on substantiality categorize them, and why destruction absolutely cannot be considered a real entity even nominally. Firstly, Tsongkhapa says: Destruction is a real entity, because both the function of destruction and non-destruction are real entities. If the first is not established, then destruction is a real entity, because destruction has a cause. If it is not established, then it follows that it is established. Whatever has a cause does not remain in the second moment; if that is the case, then not remaining in the second moment also has a cause. It is also said: The sprout, with the aid of the cause that arises in the first moment, produces the real effect of destruction in the second moment. It is also said: Although the destruction of the sprout cannot now be produced by a cause, the destruction itself is acted upon by a cause, so it has a cause. It is also said: The destruction of the seed is a real entity, because the cessation of the seed is a real entity. This is established, because the sprouting of the sprout and the cessation of the seed are simultaneous. If it is not established, then the sprouting of the sprout will favor one side, and

It is asserted that the cessation of nature and the conformity to the cessation of nature are not simultaneous, because the arising of a sprout and the cessation of a seed are not simultaneous. Therefore, the sprout does not exist at the time of the seed (192a), but later it exists, so it is with cause. Similarly, the destruction of a sprout, the destruction of a sprout before, also did not exist at the time of the previous sprout, but later it exists, so it is with cause. Thus it is said. Moreover, in the "Ten Bhumi Sutra," it is said, "Due to the cause of birth, there is aging and death," so death is the destruction of that sentient being that has died, which is said to be produced by the cause of birth. Also, in that same sutra, it is said, "Death also has two functions, namely, destroying formations and producing the cause of complete ignorance." So death has two functions: to be the cause of death, and death produces ignorance. Therefore, destruction has the cause of production, and destruction can produce the result. Therefore, "Existence and non-existence are conditioned phenomena." Thus it is said. As it is said, "From the exhaustion of the cause, there is peace, exhaustion is called the object." The real objects such as sprouts, and the non-real objects of their destruction, both are conditioned phenomena. The exhaustion of the cause like oil is said to be the cause of the exhaustion of the result like a lamp. Thus it is said. All the reasoning that can establish it is inverted, and all the scriptural proofs are irrelevant. First, in establishing that destruction is a real object, after making two assertions and rebuttals, if there is a cause for not staying in the second moment, then it is the same that there is also a cause for not staying in the second moment, if it is established to be the same, if the real object produced by the cause is a real object, then the real object that has ceased after being produced by the cause (192b) must also be the same as a real object, if you say so, how do you prevent it? Also, the cause of the sprout arising in the first moment has benefited, and the real result of the sprout's destruction in the second moment can also be produced, because of that reason, the sprout object arises in the later second moment, and the destruction of the sprout object in the first moment can also benefit, if you think so, because of that thought, the arising of the sprout object is the cause of the destruction of the sprout object, and the destruction of the sprout object is also the cause of the arising of the sprout object, if you think so, arising is the cause of destruction, destruction is the cause of arising, and death is the cause of immortality.
