Therefore, some say that for various teachings of the Vijnanavada school, showing the aspect of teachings with a substantialist viewpoint is also completely inappropriate because the situation is the same. Some Shravakas say that at the very moment of creating karma, something called "non-loss" arises, which is similar to an IOU. Even if there is an IOU, the debt can be used, but just like the creditor's property, non-loss, is recovered with interest, even if the karma similar to the IOU has ceased, because there is a continuation of non-loss, the relationship of karma and result is reasonable. And some Vaibhashikas say that there is something called "attainment," through the cause of attaining virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral dharmas, from attainment to non-abandonment, whether these dharmas manifest or not, a substance is produced to maintain contact with these dharmas. They say that the system of karma and result is established on this continuation. These are not reasonable, because non-loss and attainment seem to be considered as substantially existing non-associated compositional factors. This is unreasonable because it cannot be observed by the three valid cognitions—direct perception, inference, and scripture—apart from form, mind, and mental factors. If it is reasonable, it would lead to the fault that compositional factors are permanent, etc. Are non-loss and attainment the cause of producing compositional factors? Or are they the cause of non-separation? The first case is not reasonable, because when the compositional factors have not arisen, they have also not arisen, so they will never arise. And, when the compositional factors arise, no power of theirs is seen. The second case is also not reasonable, because in the continuum of one person, contradictory dharmas that do not coexist, such as virtuous and non-virtuous, defiled and undefiled, to be abandoned and antidotes, etc., would exist simultaneously. The Sautrantikas and other schools say that the system of karma and result is established on the seeds and habitual tendencies that virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral dharmas imprint on the mind continuum. To this, those who accept the Alaya consciousness say: The previous statements are not reasonable, and it is good to establish it on seeds and habitual tendencies. But even so, if there is no Alaya consciousness, the seeds and habitual tendencies themselves are impossible, because the continuum of entering consciousnesses is unstable, so it is meaningless to imprint habitual tendencies on them. If it is meaningful, then producing results from karma that has perished and passed a long time would lead to production from nothing.

Because the past or future become substantially existent. The entering consciousnesses, etc., are described as virtuous and non-virtuous, with outflows and without outflows, etc., and because they arise very clearly, they are not suitable as a basis for habits that are incompatible with them; and such things as the mind consciousness arising as virtuous and without outflows, the things that act as doorways are other minds and mental factors; it is not reasonable for oneself to act as a doorway for habits for anything; if the former imposes habits on the latter, then one of them does not exist as a thing, so it is not suitable as the basis for what is imposed and the basis for imposing; if imposing on simultaneous things, then the mind consciousness that acts as a doorway, such as virtuous, non-virtuous, undescribed, etc., is impossible to arise and cease together with other mind consciousnesses; in states such as fainting and deep sleep and mindless absorption, having ceased (187a) and after a long time, it is not reasonable for the later reason to arise, etc., do not say too many faults. Therefore, the alaya consciousness is a continuous stream from beginningless samsara until remainderless nirvana, never interrupted and undescribed. Because it is not clear, it is not contradictory to any dharma such as virtuous, non-virtuous, undescribed, etc., in the same continuum. Nor is it unchanging like space and analytical non-cessation. Because it arises and ceases together with the dharmas of virtuous, non-virtuous, undescribed that act as doorways in the same continuum, it is suitable as a basis for habits. From such a stream of alaya consciousness, according to the conditions, the results of the corresponding cause and maturation, whether in this life or experienced after birth and other times, arise as their time. As it says in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle: "The constant undescribed imposed, connected with the imposer, is not other than the imposer, this is the nature of habit." So it is said. This is also unreasonable, because there is no proof for the existence of such an alaya consciousness, and if it exists, then the self and Ishvara, etc., should not reasonably be refuted, and whether self or other, the consciousness that does not know is contradictory to being substantially existent, and the dharmas of virtuous, non-virtuous, undescribed are connected with it.
