Therefore, just like the nature of phenomena without inherent existence, the world arises dependently in various ways of arising and ceasing. Third, it is shown that the basis of karma and its result, spoken of directly and incidentally, is the meaning of truth. First, even without inherent existence, the connection of karma and its result is reasonable; to prove this point through examples; and to avoid excessive extrapolation without limit. The first point is: Because it does not cease by its own nature, therefore, even without the alaya, it is capable of this. In some cases, even after the karma has ceased for a long time, know that the result will still arise accurately. Therefore, not only are we liberated from the view of permanence and annihilation because there is no inherent existence in either of the two truths, but also in the conventional truth, even if the karma has ceased for a long time, it is meaningless to completely grasp the inherent nature of things like the alaya for the sake of the connection between karma and its result, because such things are not truly established even in the conventional truth. As it says in the root text: If it exists until the time of ripening, then the karma will become permanent; if it ceases, since it has ceased, how will it produce a result? As it appears. Does the karma exist until the time of ripening? Or does it not exist because it ceases immediately after arising? No matter how you say it, you must say that things are permanent or annihilated. When challenged in this way, the non-Buddhists who accept karma and its result believe that because there is a permanent self of the person who experiences the result of karma, karma and its result, heaven, liberation, and so on are reasonable. But according to the Buddhist point of view, since there is no self of the person, and the aggregates are momentary, karma and its result, heaven, liberation, and so on are impossible. Because the karma that has not been done will be encountered, the karma that has been done will be wasted, and the karma accumulated by others will be experienced by others, and so on, the results of karma will be confused. Because it is said that the aggregates are momentary, if the Shakya school has no self, then the efforts required for heaven and liberation will become meaningless. That's what they say. This is unreasonable, because for the basis of karma and its result like this, the fact that the permanent self exists will be harmed by the reasoning that will be explained in the future. If the permanent self experiences the result of karma, then either all the results of karma will be experienced at once, or they will never be experienced. Because the permanent self experiences the vipaka without relying on conditions.

Because permanence, oneness, happiness, suffering, and various changes such as evil destinies, higher realms, and liberation are contradictory; and if there is a self (184b), one cannot abandon self-grasping, because all afflictions arise from it, so liberation is unreasonable, etc., and endless faults will arise. These Dharmikas, having fallen into the faults mentioned above, do not accept a permanent self and karma. Among them, the Vatsiputriyas think that even if it is impermanent, the faults raised by outsiders will arise, so they say that the aggregates, as the basis of karma and its results, cannot be said to be the same as or different from the aggregates, but they accept a person who cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent. This is also unreasonable, because it will be refuted by the reasoning to be explained; and in nirvana without remainder, if there is a self, it should be said to be different from the aggregates, because when the aggregates are destroyed, the self is not destroyed. Therefore, it will also become permanent. If there is no self, when the aggregates are destroyed, the self will also be destroyed, so it will become impermanent, so it should be said to be the same as the aggregates. The Pramanavarttika says: "In impermanence there is no saying, it is not the cause of anything, in the unspeakable bondage and liberation, how can it be said to be existent or nonexistent?" Just like this, even in conventional terms, it cannot be said to be impermanent, so it cannot be a cause, and bondage and liberation are also unreasonable. Other realists admit that the basis of karma and its results is impermanent, and in order to answer the argument of "how can the fruit arise from the karma that has ceased," they say that even if these are impermanent, until the fruit is ripe, the moment (185a) one after another arises from the previous one, and the continuity is uninterrupted, so the relationship between karma and its results is reasonable. The previous one is destroyed, so it is not permanent; the latter one arises, so it is not annihilation; the previous and latter continuity is one, so there is no fault of encountering what has not been done, etc. Among them, some of the Mahasamghikas admit that the person and sentient being who are the basis of karma and its results are the same entity as the aggregates, but this is also unreasonable, because it will be refuted by the scriptures and reasoning to be explained; and if there is a self, it contradicts the four seals of Dharma, and because liberation cannot be attained, it cannot be the teaching of the Teacher. The former view and this view both admit that the person is substantially existent.
