Those non-Buddhists, examining the self in their own ways, and examining illusions, mirages, etc., those do not even exist in the world. Driven deeply by the sleep of ignorance, the internal and external non-Buddhists, from their respective treatises, examine the self, the lord, the atoms, the ālaya, etc., as existing in the nature of things as they are; and examine the sense-deceptive illusions, mirages, etc. (157a) as horses, cattle, etc., those do not even exist in the world, let alone the ultimate truth? Because worldly people do not use those to name things. If it is thought that those examined by the non-Buddhists do not exist in meaning, but exist in the recognition of names, then those who recognize in this way are abandoning the conventional truth that is universally recognized in the world, and relying on a dharma that does not exist in the world to make choices, just like wanting to climb a tree, but letting go of the previous branch and not grabbing the next branch, they will fall into the abyss of wrong views, contradicting the view of the two truths, and thus will not be able to obtain the fruit. Some people think that the internal and external non-Buddhists are attached to the fabricated appearances and sense-deceptive appearances as real, and they are also real in their minds, and they are also worldly people, so they will become conventional truths, because both truths depend on the mind. When meaning is clear, both are false. Because there is such a saying. But this is not pervasive, just as the ultimate truth is established in relation to the vision of the samadhi of the noble ones, the conventional truth is also established in relation to the common recognition and vision of the world. Therefore, illusions, mirages, etc., are not recognized as having a function in the world, and the examinations of the non-Buddhists cannot be used as the basis for naming and choosing in the world. If one person fabricates or sees something that is not real, not everyone will fabricate or see it in this way, and if it contradicts the (157b) names of all people, then the false part of the previous person's fabrication and vision must be abandoned because it contradicts the common recognition, because this treatise teaches exactly this. The statement "depends on the mind" will instead become an argument for refutation.

That argument is to show that when examining reality, if both inversions of the conventional are true, then they are equally true; if both are false, then they are equally false, to show that they are the same. And this argument is to show the two inversions only on the conventional level, according to worldly fame. Second, how can the eye gazed upon by one with cataracts not harm the knowledge without cataracts? Likewise, the mind that has abandoned stainless wisdom does not harm the stainless mind. Here, refuting other-origination is not harmed by worldly direct perception, because the distinction of conventional truth follows worldly people and then speaks of truth and falsehood, but it does not merely remain in the sight of worldly people, following them and refuting, but refutes based on the observation of the noble ones. What is shown is: the hair, etc., gazed upon by the eye of one with cataracts, does not cause the harm of confusion to the knowledge without cataracts, just as the mind of a child who has abandoned stainless wisdom, even if confused and seeing other-origination, does not cause the harm of confusing the stainless mind of the noble ones, because the sight of ordinary beings is not seen by the noble ones, it is a place of laughter. Second, regarding the explanation of the nature of the conventional and the ultimate, the first is: ignorance, by its nature, obscures, hence it is conventional; whatever is fabricated by it appears as untrue, that is the conventional truth, the capable one said so; fabricated things are conventional. Things are spoken of in terms of the nature of the two truths, thereby showing the conventional truth of the world: Ignorance (158n) is what makes sentient beings confused about reality, or what imputes something other than reality, thereby obscuring the seeing of the nature of reality. Such a dharma is established as conventional, the reason has already been stated. The nature of ignorance, that is, the conventional, for things that originally have no nature, but are clung to as if they exist, although not entering into the real meaning, but due to the power of fabricated dependent origination, appear as true, this is the conventional truth, the capable one said so. That is, the inverted images of dependent origination, etc.
