Therefore, (the Vaibhashikas) prevent it. If there were such a truly existent entity, there would be no Buddha; even if there were a Buddha, it would not exist. Because if phenomena slightly exist as substances that can withstand rational analysis, then the three: basis, path, and result, (152a) as well as dharma and non-dharma together with their fruits, and all the terms of samsara and nirvana would be untenable. Because it is never reasonable for nature to change into something else. Moreover, even the definition of ultimate reality according to the Realists changes in conventionality, as it says in the treatises of the Svatantrika school: "What is considered another's mother, this is considered my wife." So, is there a unique way to establish the definition and the defined for the two truths of the Prasangika Madhyamaka's own system? The answer is no. Because, when dispelling the mistaken notions in the minds of the opponents who assert the tenets of the treatises from the outsiders and the Vaibhashikas of our own school up to the Svatantrika Madhyamaka, for those definitions that consider the nature of ultimately existent entities to be truly established, they also consider that to be the definition of ultimate truth. By pointing out the harm that that definition is necessarily not included in that definition, they refute the wrong ideas of the opponents. When the Prasangika Madhyamaka relies on its own conventional truth to engage in acceptance and rejection, it does not apply the established definition and the defined of its own system to it, but rather follows the unanalyzed, inverted conventional terms that are in accordance with the world to engage in acceptance and rejection. Therefore, if it is merely nominally established in one's own system, and even the definition of ultimate truth cannot be established upon analysis, then its definition cannot be found. At that time, even if only a name of the defined remains, disguised as defined by that definition, that name is also empty of its own essence, (152b) the nature of ultimate emptiness, which is even far beyond the realm of the wisdom of the noble ones, how can anyone find the nature of its definition? Considering this meaning, in the definitive meaning scriptures of Sutra and Tantra, it says: "Everything is the nature of space, and space also lacks nature." Therefore, if one understands such a key point, some might think, is ultimate truth a non-affirming negation, analyzable or unanalyzable? If it is unanalyzable, then there is no emptiness.

It becomes a negation of negation. If it can withstand scrutiny, then emptiness becomes an unrefuted true establishment. All such groundless doubts that arise will vanish like a snake knot dissolving in the sky, as declared by the great accomplished Buddha, Nyanpa Renchen. Now, regarding the characteristic of ultimate truth, is there a phenomenon that is not harmed by reasoning, can withstand scrutiny, whose own nature is not deceptive and abides in reality, and which is the object of an unerring subject, existing in reality or not? If you say it exists, then you will become proponents of inherent existence. If it does not exist, then making distinctions about whether or not something with such characteristics is ultimately established becomes meaningless. In response, we, the Prasangikas, do not assert that the ultimate truth possessing those characteristics exists in reality, because we do not assert that the conventional truth possessing the opposite characteristics exists in reality either. This is because the two are established in dependence. I have extensively explained the reasons for this in the first and fourth chapters of the *Madhyamakavatara*, so those who wish to know should understand it there. Thus, in reality (153a), no valid cognition can establish that there is an ultimately established truth that follows such characteristics. However, even so, if one clings to extremes and asserts that the ultimate truth is established in reality, then there must be an ultimately established truth that follows such characteristics. However, we Prasangikas refute such an ultimately established truth with such characteristics through logical analysis, so it cannot be established there either. Because it is not established there, both truths are primordially empty of inherent existence, the three—character, characterized, and basis; the three—measure, result, and measured; and all the elaborations of object and subject are utterly devoid, like being unable to write letters in the sky. It has become inexpressible, unthinkable, and unspeakable. Before children, that is, worldly people, we nominally refer to it as the ultimate truth and make distinctions, so that the two truths, which are characterized by elaborations such as true establishment and signs, are situated as having entered the nature of knowable objects. There is a special need to dispel the great wrong conception that they are established in this way. The teacher, the complete and perfect Buddha, and the glorious protector Nagarjuna have well explained this, as it is said: The Buddhas teach the Dharma, relying truly on the two truths.
