These dharmas of my sect are not the tenets of those externalists either, because they cannot contradict the scriptures they have vowed to uphold, and also because they discern dharmas with reason. (141b) Therefore, if the two truths are different in meaning, then the noble ones will also appear as different. If this is accepted, then the noble ones will not be free from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, and therefore nirvana and complete enlightenment will never be possible. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "If the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality were different, then those who have seen the truth would also not be free from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. Because they are not free from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, those who have seen the truth would also not be liberated from the bonds of characteristics. If they are not liberated from the bonds of characteristics, then they would also not be liberated from the bonds of afflictions. If they are not liberated from these two bonds, then those who have seen the truth would also not attain accomplishment and the unsurpassed bliss of nirvana. They would also not fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment." And so on, it is extensively taught. Finally, it says: "Those who say, 'The characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality are different,' are entering in an improper way. Know that they are not entering in a proper way." Furthermore, the ultimate reality would not be the dharmatā, tathatā, and common characteristic of all dharmas, because it is other than dharmas. Even if it is other but is dharmatā, then everything would be the dharmatā of everything, which is too extreme. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "O extremely pure intelligence, if the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality were different, then the characteristics of ultimate reality would not be the common characteristic for all the characteristics of conditioned phenomena." And so on, it is said. The selflessness of conditioned phenomena and merely being without essence would not be established as ultimate reality, and defilement and purification would both simultaneously be established as different characteristics, because the two truths exist as different in meaning. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "If conditioned

If the characteristics of conventional truth and the characteristics of ultimate truth are different, then the mere absence of self in all phenomena, and the mere absence of inherent existence, will also not become the characteristics of ultimate truth. The characteristics of defilement and the characteristics of purification will also simultaneously become different characteristics, as it is said. Because all three wheels of those have been promised, and those scriptures have been promised as they are in their definitive meaning. Furthermore, it is extremely mistaken to think that ultimate truth exists outside of conventional truth, and to think that the nature of phenomena is that the characteristics of phenomena are completely non-existent. As it says in the Explanation of Intentions Sutra: The whiteness of a conch shell and a conch shell, the yellowness of gold and gold, the pleasantness of the sound of a lute and the sound of a lute, the fragrance of black agarwood and black agarwood, the heat of pepper and pepper, the astringency of haritaki and haritaki, the softness of cotton petals and cotton petals, the essence of butter and butter, for all phenomena (142b), impermanence, for all contaminated phenomena, suffering, for all phenomena, the absence of self of a person, also with these, the characteristics of non-pacification of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the characteristics of defilement, and desire, hatred, and ignorance, adding the word "also" to the former ones of these, are not different characteristics, or are not easy to establish as different characteristics. Those whose intelligence is extremely pure, similarly, the characteristics of phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate truth are also not different, or cannot be established as different characteristics. From "The realm of phenomena and the nature of ultimate truth are the nature of being free from one and different. Whoever thinks of them as one and different, those people have entered into an improper path." Because it contradicts what was said. Furthermore, in the Ornament of the Sutras it says: "Not existent, not non-existent, not like that, not other." And in the Differentiation of the Middle and the Extremes it says: "Not existent, not non-existent, not the nature of different and one." And in the Differentiation of Dharmata it says: "These two are not of one nature, nor are they separate natures, because existence and non-existence have differences of existence and non-existence." And in the Compendium of Vehicles it says: "What is the manner of these three natures? Are they different?"
