Therefore, in the definitive sense, one should not cling to the teacher exclusively. For example, King Śuddhodana entrusted the monk Ekacakṣus to be tamed; King Indrabhūti did not appear as detached from desire, but transformed the teacher into an image of one with desire, and thus taught the Guhyasamāja Tantra. For disciples who are virtuous but narrow-minded, who, like the chariot of the sun, believe that cause and effect are separate, a Vajradhara monk is necessary, as it is said. Therefore, it is also important for disciples to have faith, shame, and modesty. Furthermore, for those who cannot keep the vows of mantra, the actual and subsequent empowerments should be postponed. The root is: Approaching and the ritual of the earth, preparation and the entering and ripening of the disciple. Even for each of the four realizations, if the four complete limbs are not complete, one cannot ripen due to the impairment of the ritual. That is to say, for an ordinary person, a teacher with lineage, even a slight impairment of the ritual will obstruct the accomplishment. If the root of the ritual is impaired, blessings will not arise. Therefore, first, there is the approaching that purifies one's own mindstream, and the earth ritual for the ground held by the earth deities, without the need for doubt. And for the mandala and the activities of the disciple, do not forcibly enter; preparation for entering is put first, and then empowerment is given. The four or five limbs of the earth ritual are: examining the earth, taking the earth, purifying the earth, holding the earth, and protecting the earth. In old houses and the like, there is no need to examine the earth, so it is said to be four. When examining the earth, one should avoid slopes, cliffs, pits, anthills, salty soil, ashes, dust, hair, insects, and many creatures. However, there are ten places where it is not necessary to carefully examine the earth and dig for purification: the abode of sages, the cattle pens of cows and other livestock, caves, mountaintops, any land occupied by others, on houses and stone slabs, near stupas, and on the banks of river islands and lakes. Furthermore, temples, gardens, cemeteries, and the like are the same. In places where strict examination and purification are necessary, one should dig holes, fill them, and then examine them. Similarly, one should fill them with water and then examine them, and one should also examine them from the perspective of color. Taking the earth means offering precious
