and the giving of fearlessness. Moreover, in the past, someone seeking to rival Anathapindika's generosity, unable to surpass him, renounced all food and wealth and became a renunciate, just as the Buddha prophesied that he would exceed Anathapindika. The King of Kosala obtained kingship by giving a single warm meal to four ascetics. A merchant could not overcome, one cannot say 'no' when begged by a beggar, even if others steal from one's own home, one cultivates patience, and when one becomes poor, one gives the price of selling grass as alms. King Shibi built the responsibility of giving alms without end and should learn as if engaging in sacrifice. Although the Dharma is primarily done first, here the other two are done first, first giving material goods, then great giving, and then extreme giving. Giving means giving food, clothing, large and small wealth, livestock, and so on. Great giving is giving away sons, daughters, and family members when begged for. Moreover, King Sarvadada (All-Giving) was begged by other kings out of jealousy, using deceit, for Sarvadada's sons, daughters, and consorts. Although he cherished them greatly, even though the feeling of suffering was like his heart breaking, he gave with a mind that did not turn back from compassion. When we perform sacrifices, we should feel ashamed of our stinginess and become accustomed to making vows. Extreme giving is a difficult thing to do, that is, giving away one's head, eyes, hands, feet, and so on. Moreover, when our teacher became the Lord of the Earth, he allowed a beggar who was cut off below the waist to cut off his own waist with a sharp knife and give it away. When the king became King Moonlight, he cut off his head and gave it to the eyes of a fierce Brahmin, and so on, thinking about these things and striving to give. Root text: Here, what one must first become accustomed to is that the hand of a person bound by stinginess, from one hand to the other, the mind thinking of giving, repeatedly transferring, for coarse foods and so on, greed diminishes, strength increases, and thus one learns. That is to say, for those who are initially bound by stinginess, there was once a wealthy benefactor named Jarjika, who had a few things in one of his hands.

Once grasped, the other party is the beggar, repeatedly teaching him the method of giving with a willing heart, eventually being able to give extensively, similarly, one must also become accustomed to giving small items such as yogurt, etc., thereby destroying greed and increasing strength, one must practice this. Thus it is said. Root: Fearless giving protects the lives of others, liberates from the place of fear, and places them in a place of respite. This is to say that the nature of fearlessness is to give a place of respite to those who are frightened and panicked by fear, that is, to liberate them from the place of fearlessness. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should be skilled in giving and means, transforming their own flesh and blood into deeds, thereby practicing giving fearless giving to others. Root: Rituals that are pretentious despite being incapable, giving in a false posture should also be condemned. Before the heart of compassion is completely purified, giving away the body and life is prohibited in the Compendium of Trainings. This is to say that for offerings to superiors and gifts to inferiors, especially for those who cannot give away a part of the entire body from the depths of their hearts, but with pretentious rituals, that is, with the evil motivation of pursuing the eight worldly dharmas, giving in order to obtain praise and fame from others, because the karmic result is inferior, it should be condemned. Therefore, before the heart of compassion is completely purified, giving away the body and life is also prohibited by the Compendium of Trainings, the meaning of which is that great giving and supreme giving are the realm of practice for those who have obtained forbearance of the unarisen dharma. Root: Giving that is untimely is also a place that is inappropriate and should be condemned, letting go of attachment to possessions is considered the measure of giving. This is to say that untimely giving refers to the giver's impure intention and behavior of the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and the items of giving are wealth obtained through theft, robbery, and plunder, or items such as weapons that can take the lives of others, as well as meat and alcohol, giving things that are not only unhelpful but harmful. Abandoning the poor and giving to the powerful and wealthy, etc., these are all inappropriate places, wrong objects of giving. Therefore, for whatever food and wealth one possesses, whether large or small, being able to generate contentment and few desires, letting go of attachment, this is also considered the measure of leaping and giving. Thus material and
