Since there is nothing to be gained by obtaining and nothing to be lost by not guarding. Because there is no contradiction in any of the three periods of beginning, end, and middle, the nature is conventional, and because it is not true, it is said to be transformation accomplished. Root: The basis is pure, and both intention and manifestation are present. Possessing the three vows of practice with faith and desire. When abiding, there are distinctions, and when guarding, guard what is difficult to guard. When possessing, possess upwards, and when correcting, from one's own place. Because the degeneration is completely removed, it is said to be correction accomplished. Why? Because when faults arise, prevent everything. Because when goodness and merit arise, grant permission. Giving and preventing do not abide on the path of words alone, but are accomplished in connection with the continuum of beings. That is to say, on the path of accumulation, abandon misdeeds. On the path of preparation, accumulate virtuous dharmas. On the path of seeing, primarily do things that benefit sentient beings. Root: For the six perfections and the two accumulations, causing unarisen qualities to arise, increasing arisen qualities, accumulating virtuous dharmas, is called ethics, gathered by the training of the mind. The virtue held by love and compassion, wherever one does things that benefit sentient beings, is generosity. For this, having no self-interest is ethics, having no weariness for the benefit of others is patience. Especially entering with joy is diligence, being single-minded for the sake of sentient beings is meditation, and reality

Wisdom is abandoning stinginess; the six perfections are never separate. All four activities are endowed with mindfulness and awareness. The collection of virtues with completely pure conduct, even the lifting and placing of the feet are on the path of the six perfections. Entering without effort, accumulating merit is extremely swift. That is to say, the six perfections are: benefiting sentient beings is generosity; having no selfish motivation for that is discipline; not being discouraged in accomplishing the benefit of others is patience; entering with joy is diligence; not being distracted from that is meditation; not grasping at the reality of these things is wisdom. These things, in meaning, not thinking is generosity; not dwelling is discipline; not distinguishing any difference is patience; having no acceptance or rejection is diligence; not being attached is meditation; not being dualistic is wisdom. The two accumulations are: causing the unarisen qualities of cause—merit and result—wisdom to arise, and increasing the arisen qualities, this is called the discipline of gathering virtue, which is included in the training of the mind. Whatever great or small virtue is held by loving-kindness and compassion is generosity that benefits sentient beings. From discipline, which has no selfish motivation, up to the six perfections that are never separate, are like the root. The four activities are: whatever the occasion of eating, sleeping, walking, or staying, having mindfulness and awareness in all, and the conduct of the three doors being completely pure, that is, the collection of virtues held by bodhicitta, even the lifting and placing of the feet are walking on the path of the six perfections, entering without effort, thereby perfecting the two accumulations very quickly. The six opposing factors of the six perfections are: being separated from the mind of despising others, the mind of laziness, the mind of obscuration, the mind of being completely weary from seeking, and the mind of having obstacles, these are said to be important. Here, regarding the method of gathering virtues with completely pure conduct, one should refer to what is said in the Avatamsaka Sutra and recorded in the Great Commentary. Through the holding of bodhicitta, giving one's own body, resources, ocean of virtues, and everything else to all sentient beings, directly or indirectly, and the four ways of guarding, purifying, and increasing, can completely encompass the vows of a Bodhisattva.
