The sects: The sect dwelling in the snowy mountains. The sect that speaks of designations. The sect that speaks of transcendence of the world. The Sthavira school is the lineage of Katyayana of the reed lineage. The three that branched out from it are: the sect dwelling in the Jeta Grove. The sect dwelling on the Fearless Mountain. The sect dwelling in the monastery. The lineage of Upagupta of the Draghaka lineage. The three that branched out from it are: the Sarvastivada sect. The Dharmagupta sect. The Haimavata sect. Combining these, there are eighteen Shravaka sects. Although these sects have different forms, they are all related to the five kinds of monastic conduct, and there is nothing that is not covered by the Buddha's precepts. Thus, following the Buddha, if one takes the Pratimoksha vows as they are, and does not keep them properly, from the point of view of a root downfall, if one confesses openly and is given training, it can still be remedied. However, until one attains the ultimate fruit of the Pratimoksha vows, the state of an Arhat, the very basis of defeat cannot be completely exhausted, and therefore the attainment of liberation will be delayed for a long time. The Vinaya Sutra says: One will not hear the Dharma, and if one hears it, one will quickly forget it, and the realization of the paths and bhumis will not arise. The benefit of guarding is that in this life one can be liberated from disease, the king's punishment, and poverty, etc., and there are many benefits. If one takes vows for the sake of these benefits, it is to seek the vows that protect from fear, and if one takes vows for the sake of attaining the happiness of gods and humans in the next life, it is for the sake of good wishes. These two do not liberate from samsara, but only attain temporary happiness. If one knows that the nature of samsara is suffering, and takes vows with the thought of renunciation, that is the tenet of the Shravaka's own school. If it is taken with the Mahayana Bodhicitta, then whichever of the eight kinds of liberation vows one takes, it will be transformed into the Pratimoksha vows of a Bodhisattva. Moreover, now is the time when the teachings are declining, and those who boast of having entered the Dharma are not tamed or disciplined, are far from renunciation, and are fond of following the ways of householders. In this time, even the benefit of guarding one vow for one day is equal to guarding all the vows in the age of prosperity. Therefore, nowadays, one should not despise the Upavasa and Ashtanga vows, etc., and it is very important to practice them.

Excellent! Root text: The precepts that excel by dedicating to the cessation of suffering, holding the Bodhisattva vows by accomplishing benefit for others, if one obtains genuine empowerment, then it is the mantra vows. The three are complete, the objects of learning and qualities are numerous. Although the essence is one, the aspects are different, residing in the continuum of one individual. If internal contradictions arise, the higher one is emphasized, this is renowned as the tradition of the previous scholars and accomplished ones. Although the form of the lower one appears contradictory, it is in accordance with the higher one, the necessity of abandoning harm and accomplishing benefit is the same. If something contradicts all three, then it is absolutely impossible to permit, if permitted, it is impossible to contradict, that is the nature of phenomena. That is, for those who guard their mind stream with the intention of abandoning afflictions and non-virtuous tendencies, and who aim for the enlightenment of the Hearers, it is the Pratimoksha; continuously gathering all virtuous dharmas and accomplishing benefit for others is the Bodhisattva vows; on top of that, if one obtains genuine empowerment of mantra, then it is the mantra vows. Thus, the precepts that excel by dedicating to the cessation of suffering, and those who complete the three vows of the Bodhisattva by accomplishing benefit for others, have numerous objects of learning and qualities. Although their essence is one, their aspects are different, residing in the continuum of one individual, residing separately, and if internal contradictions arise, the higher of the higher is emphasized, which is renowned as the tradition of the previous scholars and accomplished ones. Although the lower one appears to contradict the Pratimoksha, it is in accordance with the higher one, the necessity of abandoning harm and accomplishing benefit is the same, and if something contradicts all three, then it is absolutely impossible to permit, if permitted, it is impossible to contradict, that is the nature of phenomena. Root text: Thus, for the Hearers, it is a downfall, for the Bodhisattva, it is a similar misdeed, becoming an intoxicating substance, as the samaya substance of mantra, the conceptual aggregates of the person who enjoys it appear as deities, both the basis and the intention transform. Not a monk, not a Bodhisattva, without skillful means, not overcome by attachment and afflictions, all appearances are deities and mandalas, and the nature of the samaya substance to be enjoyed is nectar, for whom is it permitted to establish this transformation of perception? From the Pratimoksha and the Bodhisattva's, from the monks and the Sangha, offering to the Yidam, the gathering also transforms into increasing perfection. With that (transformation of perception), explain the other parts of the training. This is, for the Hearers, the drinking of alcohol is
