For example, once there was a frog living in the sea, which was thrown by the waves into a well. There was already a frog in the well, who asked, "Where did you come from?" The frog from the sea replied, "From the great ocean." The frog in the well thought that there was no place bigger than the well it lived in, so it pointed to one-third of the well and asked, "Is the ocean this big?" The frog from the sea said, "It's much bigger than that." Then it pointed to one-half of the well, and so on, to ask. Finally, the frog from the sea said, "Even if it were many times bigger, it wouldn't compare to the ocean." The frog in the well felt very ashamed. Root text: Hearing little, breaking vows and commitments, low capacity, and conduct soaring high. Severing the rope of love and compassion, mad guides increase sin. This means that those who have only heard a little, whose merits of scripture are few, and who have broken the vows of individual liberation and the bodhisattva vows, as well as the commitments of the four empowerments of tantra, whose capacity is lower than anyone else, yet flaunt themselves with gorgeous clothes, wealth, servants, etc., and use arrogance and hypocrisy to elevate their conduct, as if ascending to the sky. Some, severing the rope of love and compassion, become mad guides, who only teach those who are foolish and superstitious how to increase sin. Root text: Especially if one is not more virtuous than oneself, relying on fame without bodhicitta, a blind leader is a great mistake, false association wanders in the darkness. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the holy one, the virtuous deeds of the faithful will be wasted, and the rare leisure will be like a poisonous snake, deceived like mistaking the shade of a tree. This means that if the disciple is not more virtuous than the guru, blindly relying on the guru's fame and high position without understanding the reason, it is like entrusting the path to a blind person, which is a great mistake and will lose the ultimate benefit. Associating with such a bad friend will not only not increase merit, but will also be stained by faults. Even associating with false faith, one will be lost in the darkness of being ignorant of doing good and abandoning evil. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the holy one from the beginning, those foolish and superstitious people with little merit will encounter bad gurus.

Because of relying on someone who doesn't know the path, the virtuous accumulations of goodness are wasted. Finding this leisure time like this, if compared to an example, it's like a person carrying a heavy burden at night, and a venomous snake is lying on the road. Mistaking it for the shade of a tree, they rest on it, and the snake eats them. Similarly, one will be deceived by a bad spiritual friend. If compared to a story, it's from "Frightening Lightning": In the past, there was a monk named "Immaculate Conduct" who only superficially acted like a yogi. Because there were no lamas who were skilled in the meaning of the Dharma residing, the assembly of hundreds of thousands of monks requested that the monk succeed the lama's seat. That monk became arrogant because of his high position, and without knowing, he wrongly practiced similar conduct, so that monk, together with the assembly of hundreds of thousands of monks, was born as Rudra for countless eons. Thus, without empowerment, guidance, and transmission, accumulating much learning and harming the cause and effect through wrong thinking. If those with wrong views and dry understanding of meditation, who only focus on emptiness, occupy the position of a teacher, it will be as just said. Root verse: The lama who possesses all qualities is the essence of the wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas. For the sake of those to be tamed, he comes in the form of a person in the realm of beings. He is the unsurpassed root of all accomplishments. This means that he is rich in the excellent qualities of vast learning and scripture. With unsurpassed wisdom of realization, he is skilled in liberating the disciples' minds. Such a lama is the one who possesses all qualities. Such a holy being is the essence of the wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas, so he comes in the form of a person in the realm of beings to be tamed, and his qualities are the unsurpassed root of all accomplishments. This is praise. Root verse: In the provisional meaning, he is in harmony with all, but in the ultimate meaning, he contradicts all. Because he has intention, he is superior to all. He is skilled at cutting doubts and can endure wrong views and fatigue. This means that according to the conventional truth, the provisional meaning, there is no disagreement with anyone, so he is in harmony with all to some extent. In the ultimate meaning, he contradicts all. For example, a child only cares about their own benefit, while a noble person cares about the benefit of others. These two are
