This is about seeking offerings. Measuring by what is obtained means: complaining that the offerings of wealth are too small because one goes to the patron's house for rituals and recitations; also, feeling that it is not right to need so many offerings for reciting so little, regarding it like doing business. Even worse, using meat and alcohol to entice in order to seek offerings. Both giving and not giving are forbidden by the Buddha, and if one indulges in these without restraint, then the conduct of the previous Buddhas and their followers, the upright practitioners, will be defiled. Therefore, one should live in a good place without obstacles, living a good life unmixed with the five wrong livelihoods, practicing virtue with good friends, striving to perform virtuous deeds, etc., thereby encouraging oneself. Root verse: In order to perfect the qualities of all trainings, one should rely on excellent individuals. Just as in the forests of Malaya, even ordinary pieces of wood that wander about, are like sandalwood fragrance with moist branches, one follows whoever one relies on. This means that all the methods of training from taking refuge to attaining liberation come from relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. For example, in the sandalwood forests of Malaya, even the trunks of ordinary, inferior trees that wander about, also because of the merit of being associated with the best fragrance for a long time, the branches are moistened with fragrance, like the fragrance of sandalwood, one follows whichever teacher one relies on. Root verse: Perfecting all the excellent Dharma, although difficult to obtain due to the power of the degenerate age, on the pure ground of the three vows, moistening the mind with much learning and great compassion, being skilled in the rituals of the sutras and tantras, being rich in the fruits of renunciation, realization, and stainless wisdom, adorned with the flowers of the four means of gathering, one should rely on the teacher who attracts the bees of fortunate disciples. In the past, in the age of perfection, both teacher and disciple met with complete qualities, but in this age, perfecting all the excellent Dharma is difficult to obtain due to the power of the degenerate age, however, the three vows of individual liberation, bodhisattva, and mantra, knowing the difference between what is allowed and what is forbidden, like pure land, with much learning and

With great compassion moistening the mind, diligently striving to take care of others, and being proficient in the rituals of the ocean of tantras of the three baskets and inner and outer tantras, having eliminated the defilements of afflictive and cognitive obscurations, and being rich with the fruit of stainless wisdom of suchness and all-ness, giving what is needed, speaking softly and pleasantly, being in accordance with worldly affairs, and gathering the bees of fortunate disciples with the example of the four acts of benefiting others like a blooming flower, one should rely on such a teacher. Root text: In particular, the lama who teaches the oral instructions, having received the empowerment, abiding in the vows, being extremely peaceful, understanding the meaning of the tantras of the ground, path, and fruit, having completed the recitation and practice, and having liberated one's own mind through realization, having immeasurable compassion, solely seeking the benefit of others, having few affairs, being diligent and mindful of the Dharma, having great renunciation and also encouraging others to do so, being skilled in means and having the blessings of the lineage, relying on such a one will quickly attain accomplishments. This is the lama who teaches the oral instructions of secret mantra in particular, having fully received the empowerment of the inner and outer mandalas, having pure vows and commitments, having an extremely peaceful mind, the ground tantra being the Tathagatagarbha, the path tantra being the means of realizing the suchness of the two stages of generation and completion, the distinction between the two truths, the fruit tantra being the way to combine the five bodies and five wisdoms, etc., understanding them in one's mind. Relying on the two, maturation and liberation of the path, entering the generation and completion stages, and having the signs of the recitation blessed by oneself, being inseparable from the deity, being complete, and the completion stage also having objects and subjects, tummo, illusory body, dream, clear light, transference, etc., the general rules of secret mantra, and if like Dzogchen, then the path is the yellow thread of the sun wheel of Tögal, the white thread of the moon wheel, the red thread of the lamp, the black thread of darkness, that is, the four great guides and the realization of the ground of non-differentiation, liberating one's own mind for sure, not just understanding. With immeasurable compassion, solely seeking the benefit of others, having few affairs of the eight worldly concerns, being diligent in the meaning of future lives, constantly thinking of white dharmas such as listening, thinking, and meditating, generating renunciation for the dharmas of samsara, recognizing them as faults and trying not to generate them, and the intention of liberation is to be liberated from them and achieve lasting happiness.
