Therefore, approaching the Guru requires entering the pure perception of experiencing qualities. In general, one must abandon all major and minor actions that contradict the Guru, and strive to please the Guru through outer, inner, and secret means without any reservation. One should not do anything without the Guru's permission, and one must accomplish whatever the Guru permits, even if it costs one's life. In particular, whether or not blessings enter depends solely on faith. Previously, a disciple asked the holy Buddha for a blessing, and the Buddha said, "Ask with a relaxed mind and with reverence." Similarly, Lord Atisha also said that all the qualities of the Mahayana must arise in dependence on the Guru, but you Tibetans only have ordinary thoughts about the Guru, so how can qualities arise? Root Verse: Those who must enter into practice, The supreme Guru's accumulations of merit and wisdom, In whatever situation, act in accordance, Being sent on errands, running errands, even cleaning, Diligent effort with results is the supreme path of accumulation. Explanation: Therefore, for any virtuous activity, disciples who must enter into practice should not separate the three—preliminary, main, and concluding practices—from skillful means and wisdom by their own power. Whatever they do, they should do it properly. Other than that, the cause of the supreme Guru, the accumulation of merit, is the act of offering and giving; the result, the accumulation of wisdom, is the moment of entering meditation and practice. In any situation, one should align one's material possessions and the diligent efforts of body, speech, and mind with the Guru's activities and practice together. To fulfill the Guru's commands, being sent on errands, running errands, even including cleaning the residence, these diligent efforts are not meaningless. Because the Guru's two accumulations are perfected, and one's own accumulations are also accumulated together, bringing results, it is the supreme and correct path of accumulating merit. Root Verse: Why take refuge and the field of accumulation, The Guru's practice of yoga, outer and inner, The essence of generation and completion stage practice, Is taught as the Buddha in all Sutras and Tantras. Explanation: Therefore, at the beginning of the path, during refuge, the Guru who appears as the field of accumulation is practiced in an outer form; in order to purify the continuum, meditating on the Guru on the crown of the head is practiced in an inner form; meditating on the Guru in the heart is practiced in a secret form.

Similarly, visualizing oneself, or transforming oneself into the form of the Guru Yidam during the generation stage, is also like practicing secret mantras. The Guru is the only one; there are no Three Jewels or Three Roots more supreme than the Guru. If there were, one could directly rely on that Guru and request blessings and accomplishments. Therefore, it is crucial to arrange all the interdependent connections of the preliminary, main, and concluding practices with the Guru. Root verse: Most fools draw and meditate on images, but do not make offerings to the one actually present. They say they are meditating on the nature of reality, but do not understand the Guru's mind. Their practice and what is to be accomplished contradict each other, how sad. Expecting to meet the deities in the bardo without devotion is absurd. This refers to how, in Tibet, one might temporarily rely on a Guru who has a good reputation but with whom one has no Dharma connection more profound than the kindness they show, and then pray to them. This is like praying to a jewel that one is not destined to receive, due to the fault of not trusting one's own Guru. Regarding ignorance about not connecting with others, etc., "most fools" refers to some foolish people who merely imitate outwardly, drawing and meditating on the Guru's image, but have no faith or make any offerings to the Guru who is actually present. Separating the nature of one's own mind from the Guru's mind, they say they are practicing, but because they do not understand how to blend their mind with the Guru's mind. They seek many methods of practice, but what they seek to accomplish is something other than the Guru's mind. Thus, their practice and what is to be accomplished contradict each other, how sad—this refers to not understanding and being obscured by ignorance. Now, expecting to meet the deities in the bardo without devotion is like expecting a coward to save you in a dangerous place where you have no prior acquaintance. How strange this is, how shameful. Root verse: First, be skilled in examining the Guru; in the middle, be skilled in relying on the Guru; finally, be skilled in learning the Guru's intentions and conduct. That person will go on the right path. This refers to how, in these degenerate times, it is difficult to find a Guru who possesses all qualities. However, one should still regard as a Guru someone who has heard much, or has great faith, or has great compassion, or is very generous, or possesses discipline, or has realized emptiness, etc., even if they only possess one of these qualities. In short, no matter how well someone appears to behave in front of others, if both their thoughts and actions are in accordance with the eight worldly concerns, a teacher
