If we differentiate meditation, then the childish practice is the concentration and meditation of beings who have not entered the path, and the formless realms, which are worldly paths. Discriminating the meaning is the concentration of the path-entering accumulation stage, which makes the path of liberation manifest. The Tathagata's virtue is the concentration of the noble ones from the first ground onwards, which is without outflows. These three types of meditation have the following root: The essence of all is to hold the mind inward. The cause is continuous mindfulness and diligence. If distracted, return to it again. The action is to generate happiness and accomplish miraculous powers. The result is to obtain clairvoyance and so on. That is, the essence of meditation is to keep the mind focused inward, continuously guarded by mindfulness, and accomplished by relying on the cause of diligence. The state is that if one is led astray by external appearances and internal thoughts, one should not loosen the grip of mindfulness and awareness, and return to that state again, that is, return to the previous state of meditation. By striving in this way, the action is to temporarily bring happiness to body, speech, and mind, and to accomplish miraculous powers, and the ultimate result is to obtain clairvoyance. Such meditation requires abandoning the great obstacles, which are liking and attachment to the objects to be done, idle talk, sleep, and seeking after busyness, as well as thinking and observing forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, and liking and attachment to them. Having abandoned these, strive to prevent the mind from wandering, and thus practice common meditation. The root is: The preliminary stage of the first dhyana has investigation and analysis. The actual practice has no investigation, only analysis. The remaining three have neither investigation nor analysis. The former is the preliminary stage of the latter. It is known as the basis of the noble path. That is, in the form and formless realms, there are two ways of practicing. The first is the four dhyanas of learners and ordinary beings, and their preliminary stages, as well as entering into samadhi. Because they do not have aspiration, they are the cause of existence, are neutral feelings, and have investigation of "is it like this?" and analysis of it. This is the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, which is the preparation stage. This is also the desire and sin of the desire realm.

Transcending the realm of earth, experiencing investigation and joy is the first dhyana. Even without the investigation of "it is like this," but with discernment, this is the special mind of the first dhyana. Furthermore, being free from both investigation and discernment, not possessing prior attachment, but being full of joy and complete delight, this is the second dhyana. Separated from the attachment of the second dhyana, not separated from happiness, equanimity, and mindfulness, this is the third dhyana. Moreover, separated from the attachment of the third dhyana, while being free from the investigation of both pleasure and pain, remaining mindful, this is the fourth dhyana. Each subsequent dhyana is supported by the preceding one. Similarly, the four formless absorptions and the nine successive absorptions are merely the basis for the noble path. Root verse: The dhyana that generates all qualities, is seized by compassion and supreme wisdom, possesses many samadhis, accomplishes all forms, abandons the grasper and grasped of the single substance of mind in both coemergent and subsequent attainment, when arising from samadhi, the subsequent attainment is vast, and it exists universally up to the seventh ground. That is to say, the dhyana that generates all the qualities of the Great Vehicle, being seized by compassion and supreme wisdom, possessing many samadhis, accomplishing all forms, abandoning the grasper and grasped of the single substance of mind in both coemergent and subsequent attainment, when arising from samadhi, the subsequent attainment is vast, it shows that the differences of dullness and agitation are universally present up to the seventh ground. Furthermore, all the doors of samadhi are summarized by the union of shamatha and vipashyana, therefore, vipashyana without stable shamatha is like a butter lamp in the wind, and mere shamatha without vipashyana cannot cut off all obscurations, just as with the shamatha of the four dhyanas and the formless dhyanas, one revolves in samsara at the peak of existence. Among these, shamatha makes the mind calm by stopping the wind of conceptual thoughts, while vipashyana suppresses the evil views of outsiders such as ignorance and seeing aggregates as terrifying, and it cannot be defeated by evil tenets and the unstated. Furthermore, the Shravakas have more samadhi and less wisdom. Bodhisattvas are the opposite of that, and are able to accom
