If one has to enjoy in a place with unpleasant sounds, or similarly, when bathing, one needs the patient's permission, or if one has to wear leftover clothes or white clothes or leather, etc., that are not suitable to wear, one should think that it is allowed for the sake of protecting the lives of the poor and destitute. If one has to touch precious jewels, one should think that it is allowed for the purpose of offering to the Three Jewels and saving sentient beings. For things that are neither allowed nor forbidden, one should respect those that are close and in accordance with them. Root text: The Sarvastivadins, the Mahasanghikas, the Sthaviras, and the Mahasammatas, all four sects, all the precepts of these sects, it is impossible that they are not covered by the Teacher's regulations, therefore, one can obtain the authority over all the precepts. This refers to the Sarvastivadins, the Mahasanghikas, the Sthaviras, and the Mahasammatas. Among them, the seven sects that branched out from the first are: the Sarvastivadins, the Kasyapiyas, the Dharmaguptakas, the Bahusrutiyas, the Tapaniyas, the Samkrantikas, and the Sautrantikas. The Mahasanghikas are the lineage of the Brahmin Mahakasyapa, from which five sects branched out: the Eastern Mountain Sect, the Western Mountain Sect, the Snow Mountain Sect, the Prajnaptivadins, and the Lokottaravadins. The Sthaviras are the lineage of Katyayana of the Sugarcane clan, from which three sects branched out: the sect residing in Jetavana, the sect residing on the Fearless Mountain, and the sect residing in the Monastery. The lineage of Upagupta of the Draksayana clan, from which three sects branched out: the Sarvastivadin sect, the Dharmaguptaka sect, and the Vatsiputriya sect. Altogether, there are eighteen Sravaka sects. Although these sects are different, they are all related to the five pravrajya practices, and it is impossible that they are not covered by the Teacher's regulations. Therefore, if one follows the Teacher and takes the Pratimoksha vows as prescribed, but does not protect them properly, then like a root downfall, one gives the precepts without concealment, and although it can be remedied, the essence of defeat cannot be completely exhausted until one obtains the ultimate fruit of Pratimoksha, the state of Arhat, therefore, the attainment of liberation will be delayed for a long time. The Vinaya Sutra says: The Dharma will not be heard, and what is heard will be quickly forgotten.

"The path of realization does not arise." Furthermore, the benefits of guarding are many, such as liberation from illness, the king's punishment, and poverty in this life. If one takes vows for the sake of pursuing those benefits, it is a vow of protection from fear. If one takes vows merely for the sake of the happiness of gods and humans in the next life, it is a good aspiration. However, neither of these two leads to liberation from samsara, but only to temporary happiness. Knowing that the nature of samsara is suffering, and taking vows and precepts with the mind of renunciation, is the tenet of the Hearer's own school. If it is grasped by the Great Vehicle's Bodhicitta, then whichever of the eight types of individual liberation vows it may be, it will be transformed into the Pratimoksha vow of a Bodhisattva. Moreover, now is the time when the teachings are nearing decline, and those who boast of entering the teachings are also untamed and unrestrained, far from renunciation, and fond of following householders. In this time, even the benefit of guarding a single precept for a single day is equal to guarding all the precepts completely in the age of resurgence. Therefore, nowadays, practices such as Upavasa and fasting should not be despised, and it is extremely important to practice them. The root is: Superior discipline is exceeding by dedicating to passing away from sorrow. Accomplishing benefit to others is the Bodhisattva vow. Obtaining genuine empowerment is the mantra vow. The three complete, the precepts and qualities are all numerous. In essence one, but with different aspects. It abides in the continuum of one person. If internal contradictions arise, the higher one is emphasized. This is known as the tradition of the wise and accomplished ones of the past. Although the form of the lower one appears contradictory, the necessity of avoiding harm and benefiting others is consistent. If something is contradictory, it is impossible to allow it. If it is allowed, it is impossible for it to be contradictory, that is the nature of things. That is to say, for those who restrain their mind-stream from afflictions and non-virtuous aspects with the mind of renunciation, and who aim for the Bodhi of the Hearers, it is the Pratimoksha vow. Continuously gathering all virtuous dharmas and accomplishing benefit to others is the Bodhisattva vow. On top of that, if one obtains a genuine mantra empowerment, that is the mantra vow. That is, the discipline that is superior by dedicating to passing away from sorrow, and the three vows of the Bodhisattva that are complete by accomplishing benefit to others, have endless precepts and qualities. Although these vows are the same in essence, they have different
