For a complete Upāsaka (dge bsnyen), the roots to be abandoned are the four (i.e., killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, and lying) plus alcohol, making a total of five. For an Upāsaka who holds the Three Refuges, there are three to be abandoned, three to be practiced, and three corresponding ones. Among the ordained, there are two types: those who have taken the Bhikṣu vow and those who have not. The former is further divided into Śrāmaṇera and Bhikṣu. The former (Śrāmaṇera) should abandon: abandoning refuge, disrespecting the Abbot and Ācārya, accepting the signs of a householder, abandoning the signs of an ordained person, etc. The root is: A Śrāmaṇera should abandon killing, stealing the property of others, non-celibacy, lying, and mixed alcohol, singing and dancing, garlands, large and high beds, as well as food after noon, and accepting gold and silver. Holding the ten precepts is its characteristic. This speaks of the ten coarse things to be abandoned directly taught to a Śrāmaṇera, and the two cases of distinguishing from subtle points separately through implication. If these are summarized, they can be classified into the three branches of discipline, mindfulness, and asceticism. The detailed circumstances of these should be viewed in the commentary. The root is: A Śikṣamāṇā is on top of that, for those who have arisen, contact, etc., should abandon twelve kinds, with antidotes, etc., and the afflictions of women, whether they can endure for two years, etc., should be observed. This speaks of a Śikṣamāṇā taking the vows of a Śikṣamāṇā on the basis of obtaining the ten precepts of a Śrāmaṇera. That is, on top of the previous precepts, for those who have arisen, with the methods of abandoning twelve kinds such as contact, etc., and the afflictions of women, whether they can abandon desire, and whether they can endure the precepts for two years, etc., should be observed. These twelve to be abandoned are the six root dharmas and the six conforming dharmas, a total of twelve. The seven faultless ones also belong to the Śikṣamāṇā. The root is: A Bhikṣu has four root defeats, as well as thirteen Saṃghāvaśeṣa, thirty Niḥsargika Pāyantika, ninety Śuddha Pāyantika, four Prātideśanīya, one hundred and twelve Śaikṣa, two hundred and fifty-three categories. This speaks of the four root defeats of a Bhikṣu: non-celibacy, taking what is not given, killing, and lying. On top of this, there are thirteen Saṃghāvaśeṣa for the Saṃgha, namely: emission of semen, Saṃghāvaśeṣa of touching a woman's body, Saṃghāvaśeṣa of speaking obscene words, Saṃghāvaśeṣa of seeking offerings and praise,
