When others, through deception alone, have taken away all the possessions of sons and daughters of liberation, and thus one experiences the suffering of extreme attachment to them, as if one's heart were about to burst, even then, with a mind that does not turn away from generosity, one should give. When we make offerings and give alms, we should feel ashamed of our own stinginess and greed, and become accustomed to making vows. The most extreme giving is difficult to do, namely, giving away one's head, eyes, hands, feet, and so on. Moreover, when our teacher manifested as the Glorious One Who Walks the Earth, he allowed a beggar whose body was cut off below the waist to cut off his own waist with a sharp knife and give it away; when he manifested as King Moonlight, he cut off his head and gave it to the eye of a fierce Brahmin, and so on. Thinking of these things, one should strive to give. Root verse: Here, those who are first made accustomed, the hand of a person bound by miserliness, from one to the other, the thought of giving, repeatedly moving to vegetables and so on, attachment is destroyed, strength increases, and one should train. This means that for those who are initially bound by miserliness, such as a miserly householder who holds a small object in one hand and pretends to give it to a beggar with the other, one should practice repeatedly, and eventually one will be able to give extensively. In this way, one should also become accustomed to giving small objects such as vegetables, and thus train in destroying attachment and increasing strength. Thus it is said. Root verse: Fearless giving protects the lives of others, liberating from fearful places, giving a place of comfort. This means that the nature of fearlessness is to place those who are frightened and trembling with fear in a place of great comfort, that is, to liberate them from fear. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should be skilled in giving and means, transforming their own flesh and blood into benefit, and thus train in giving fearlessness to others. Root verse: Performing careless rituals when one is unable, such giving is also criticized, for those whose minds of compassion are extremely impure, giving away body and life is prohibited in the Compendium of Trainings. This means that for the general practice of offering upwards and giving downwards, and especially for the whole or part of the body, if one is unable to give from the depths of one's heart, but carelessly performs rituals, such giving will also be criticized. For those whose minds of compassion are extremely impure, the Compendium of Trainings prohibits giving away body and life.

Giving motivated by the eight worldly concerns, seeking praise and fame from others, is criticized for its inferior results. Therefore, even giving up one's body and life before the mind of compassion is completely purified is prohibited in the Compendium of Trainings, because great giving and extreme giving are the realm of those who have attained forbearance of the unborn dharma. Root text: Giving created without inquiry is also a non-place, a place to be condemned, abandoning attachment to possessions is considered the measure of giving. This means that giving created without inquiry refers to the giver's impure body, speech, and mind, or the wealth obtained through theft, robbery, and plunder, or weapons that can take the lives of others, as well as meat and alcohol, which are not only unhelpful but harmful, yet are still given away. Abandoning the poor and giving to the powerful, wealthy, and so on, is a non-place, a place to be condemned, a wrong object of giving. Therefore, for whatever food and wealth, large or small, one possesses, if one can generate contentment and abandon attachment, this should also be regarded as the measure of leaping and giving. In this way, material giving and fearlessness giving become the preliminary practices for dharma giving, and then one enters into dharma giving. Root text: Dharma giving is truly of three kinds, it is difficult to teach others to practice with faith, the rituals for clearing away one's own afflictions, reading scriptures with love and compassion, planting the aspiration to liberate the white dharma, after one's own liberation, according to the capacity of beings and, in accordance with one's own nature, one should prioritize benefiting others. This means, what is dharma giving? Giving pens and books is small dharma giving, teaching the Dharma of the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and the Great Vehicle according to one's ability and capacity is medium dharma giving, and teaching the inconceivable Dharma is great dharma giving. Moreover, those who practice with faith hope that others will teach them the Dharma, just as a blind person leading a blind person, it is difficult to teach them as they are. Therefore, it is better to teach the rituals for clearing away one's own afflictions, pointing out the common and special methods for counteracting the thoughts of the three poisons, reading scriptures with a mind of love and compassion without abandoning beings, planting the aspiration for one's own liberation of the white dharma, and
