It is like comparing the act of a thief stealing the merit that someone else has obtained in an instant, meaning that one can do so merely by rejoicing. Previously, when King Prasenajit of Kosala offered food and drink to the Teacher and his retinue for days on end, a beggar on the outskirts of the town greatly rejoiced. The Teacher, who knows the three times, said to the king, "Is this dedication that you are making now dedicated for the sake of your own merit, O King? Or is it dedicated so that through the power of the virtuous deeds you have done, another may obtain greater merit than you?" The king replied, "If my virtue causes another to become more meritorious, I should ask him beforehand." So the Teacher mentioned the name of the poor man and dedicated the merit to him, which is also a benefit of rejoicing. Furthermore, the actions of samsara without liberation, such as being untamed, unpacified, and unrestrained, are defiled only by sin and deceit. For offerings and generosity that are as hard as an iron wedge, accustomed to and hardened by stinginess, etc., as hard as vajra glue, and as stiff as a wild ass towards renunciation and faith, for such people, any other means of taming is unshakable. Even for them, one should urge them to turn the three wheels of Dharma, which include the definitive, the interpretable, and the hidden meanings, with the sharp spokes of whatever tames whomever is appropriate, so that they cannot transcend the scope of higher realms and definite goodness. Furthermore, if the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three times were to abandon us, both the Teacher and the teachings would disappear. Without them, these six kinds of beings, not knowing what to accept and reject in terms of cause and effect, would only experience suffering, merely existing in a temporary state. Seeing this, in order to establish them in the state of liberation and omniscience, one should request the Teacher, who does not pass into nirvana, to remain on the throne, gathering together the value of all virtuous things, and pray that they remain for a long time for the sake of myself and other beings. Then, as a result corresponding to this cause, one will not die prematurely. Here also, because of clinging to the happiness and results of existence, trembling with self-grasping, that is, with the thought of the eight worldly concerns, even what appears to be virtuous karma will only ripen once again in samsara, obtaining a body in the higher realms.

Even though one quickly exhausts the small amount of benefit gained, those who are eager to proclaim its fame, if they possess the profound method of dedicating bodhicitta, just as iron is transformed into gold by alchemy, it will surely become the cause of non-abiding nirvana. Such immeasurable noble Dharma is not possessed by either shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, or outsiders, therefore it is said that it is not present in the teachings of other teachers. Therefore, the Buddha taught to dedicate all the good deeds done in the past and to be done in the future. Being content with one's own merit and enjoyment, like drinking nectar, if one is not content with this and does not strive to engage in activities such as offering and generosity, then the clouds of offerings not conceived in the minds of ordinary people are merely mental fabrications. This is because one is bound by stinginess with actual wealth, and like being unwilling to give, one only praises and boasts about mental fabrications, which is merely wandering at the edge of words, ultimately becoming empty talk, and being afraid of this, let alone giving actual wealth, one even takes great care in offering one's own cherished body as a seat. Furthermore, any Dharma-desiring person who has vowed to be a servant or attendant of the Three Jewels, dwelling in the cool shade of compassion, like a flower free from the threat of hail, displaying a graceful youth, such a person, amidst all kinds of turmoil, can pacify and subdue the non-peaceful messengers of Yama, and in the presence of Yama, the moment they remember the Three Jewels, they can dispel the wrathful frown of manifest realization that arises from fear, the value of which is immeasurable. Therefore, I, who have been overwhelmed by the power of ignorance in all lifetimes and possess sins, like a well-polished clear crystal, having purified all non-virtuous impurities, in the pure mind, through the bodhicitta generation ritual obtained from symbolic rituals, display the image obtained. Also, those who have fallen into the abyss of hundreds of afflictions and have broken their vows, those who are like dying patients severely afflicted by the plague of the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, and the five poisons of greed, hatred, ignorance, pride, and doubt, even if they barely survive in the presence of ordinary doctors, who may be able to help with imbalances of the four elements, but if they cannot cure the suffering caused by afflictions, then they should take refuge in the Three Jewels, calling them the supreme doctors.
