The differences are: like a livestock cart, one; like an elephant, two; like the sun and moon moving, three; like the miraculous powers of a Shravaka, four; like the miraculous powers of a Tathagata, five. The first is, having entered the Mahayana path for only a year, they do not study it accordingly, but instead study the scriptures of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The second is, those who have entered the Mahayana path and study its scriptures, but do not abandon the scriptures of the Shravakas, and practice both together. The third is, having generated the mind of Bodhi, they do not pay any attention to the scriptures of the Shravakas, but only practice the scriptures of the Mahayana. The fourth is, having entered the Mahayana path, they only keep their vows to it and do not follow others. The fifth is, having entered the Mahayana path, they practice according to its scriptures and also lead others into it. Thus, the practice of traversing the Bhumi and path of the Buddhas has infinite variations of speed and slowness. This is because, with the power of great intelligence, diligence in many methods, and with the root of wisdom, like the Mahayana, at the end of three countless eons, the vow to attain Buddhahood is destroyed. The root is: Just as a seed falls into the earth, generating the supreme mind is not important, but being born is important. This means that planting the seed of Bodhi in the continuum of ordinary beings is only a little, and its example is like a seed falling into the earth, even if it needs to sprout and ripen, but due to the obstacles of inferior paths, merely generating the supreme mind is not enough, but being born is the most important. The captain killed the short-speared black man with great compassion, thereby shortening the accumulation of merit by forty thousand eons; the Brahmin boy, fond of stars, was tormented by the desire for the merchant's daughter and began to rape her. In order to save his life, he abandoned celibacy, thereby shortening the accumulation of merit by twenty thousand eons, and so on, it is not certain whether it will stagnate for countless eons. The root is: From the three powers arises the mind of Bodhi, great compassion and accumulating merit, taking refuge. Thought and action are said to be the power of the cause. This means that the power of thought lies in mastering great compassion, the power of action lies in accumulating merit, and taking refuge is the power of a special cause.

It arises from the earth. In particular, relying on the accumulation of merit, the Mahayana mind of enlightenment arises. Previously, when the Buddha was named Renowned, he offered a silk parasol to the Buddha Electric Lamp. When the Sugata Radiant became a beggar, he offered a butter lamp to the Buddha Infinite Light and generated the mind of enlightenment, etc. It is important to contemplate these. At all times, one should strive to diligently engage in the seven-branch practice and other accumulation practices without interruption. Root text: Two types of individuals to rely on are shown: Either holding vows of any of the seven classes of individual liberation, Or primarily relying on contemplating the Three Jewels. The subsequent path of the Middle Way widely enters. This means that merely generating a common mind of enlightenment is present in both the Great and Small Vehicles, but there are no rituals or practices for it. In the Great Vehicle, there are two schools: the Mind-Only and the Middle Way. According to the former, one must possess any one of the seven classes of individual liberation. According to the latter, if one can only abandon killing and has faith and compassion, it is said that it is permissible to bestow the precepts of the mind of enlightenment. Root text: Accumulating merit is especially the method for arising; The cause is that all beings possess the essence of the Sugata; The condition is to rely greatly on a virtuous friend; The supreme guru is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, Whose mind-stream is filled with the mind of enlightenment. This means that the novice vows arise from the preceptor and teacher; the vows of a monk arise from the faithful Sangha. The precious mind of enlightenment is said to arise solely from accumulating merit. Therefore, when making offerings to the Three Jewels, one must display whatever one has without deception. Previously, when the Tibetan patrons asked Atisha to generate the mind of enlightenment, he was displeased with the small offerings and twice returned to his residence. Finally, when all possessions were piled up and displayed as offerings, he still said it was only just acceptable. Therefore, it is said that one's own resources should be divided into three parts: two parts for the Three Jewels and the guru, and one part for oneself to use. Therefore, striving to accumulate merit is said to be the method for especially generating the mind of enlightenment. Moreover, the cause is that all sentient beings possess the essence of the Sugata, just as butter permeates milk, but the condition is that one must rely on a virtuous friend with great respect.
