Or, one may adopt two approaches: fearing the three lower realms and seeking the status of gods and humans; fearing the general suffering of samsara and seeking liberation as Hearers and Solitary Realizers; and fearing self-interest and seeking the benefit of others as Bodhisattvas. In such situations where the three fears surge like a reservoir of water, one should have firm faith that only the Three Jewels can offer refuge, as there is no other more powerful entity. Therefore, the Three Jewels will surely secure both the life of this world and the life of liberation in the next. Hence, the white umbrella of the Three Jewels' fame should be raised high like a pile of white silk. This is what one should uphold as the very beginning of entering the Buddhist teachings, that is, taking refuge in the Three Jewels before all vows and precepts. Root verse: The path to liberation and the qualities of, the support and vessel, making an unfailing vow, is refuge itself, before that, knowing the qualities of the teacher and the teachings is precious. This means that, similarly, the path to liberation and omniscience, and the support or supreme vessel for its qualities, making an unfailing vow, is refuge itself. Before that, knowing the qualities of the teacher, the Buddha, and the teachings of scripture and realization, is important and precious. Root verse: The root of all dharmas is faith, which is not revealed in the minds of beings, but arises like vines sprouting from pores, when seeing the teacher and reading the scriptures. Among them, the first is pleasing faith, likewise, aspiration and conviction are irreversible, among the four, in the context of taking refuge, one must not turn back even if faced with death. This means that the root of all dharmas is faith, because when faith arises, all white dharmas manifest, and when faith disappears, the accumulation of goodness and qualities diminishes. Therefore, the method to strengthen the root of all dharmas is faith. However, for ignorant beings who lack the wisdom of strength and practice, faith is hidden in their minds and not revealed. Due to seeing the teacher who shows good and evil, and reading the scriptures of scripture and realization such as the Tripitaka, it arises and sways like vines sprouting from pores.

Just liking it is called initial faith, which is the first. An example of this is: Once, when the elephant of the enemy of birth, Norkyong Dünpa (Wealth-Protecting Teacher), was whipped, it initially ran with a mind of anger, but as soon as it saw the Bhagavan, the fierce anger subsided. That initial faith is: When one sees the characteristics of the Dharma and how practitioners perform virtuous deeds and abandon evil, one feels joy and rejoices, etc., which is accompanied by the attachment of joy. Similarly, the faith of desire is: Fearing the truth of suffering, namely birth, old age, sickness, and death, and from the heart seeking and approaching the holy Dharma that can save one from it, namely the lama who shows the truth of cessation and the path. The faith of trust is: Having a definite understanding of the qualities of the Three Jewels and believing that they will not deceive. The irreversible faith is: Having entered the door of Dharma with these three types of faith, no matter what good or bad happens, one will not turn back. An example is: Once, a Buddhist layman was captured by heretics, who said, 'You must abandon your own gods and views and join my sect, and I will not kill you.' If you do not do so, I will kill you. He only did so verbally, but not from the heart, so even if he lost his life, he would ripen good results in the future. Root (verse): The causes for generating faith are four: Relying on holy beings, associating with holy friends, remembering the Three Jewels, and contemplating the faults of samsara and meaninglessness. This means: After relying on holy lamas and associating with holy friends, all white virtuous qualities such as faith will increase. Constantly remembering the Three Jewels, generating faith and devotion, and contemplating the faults of the meaninglessness of samsaric activities, generating renunciation, thereby generating faith. If there is no faith, even if one diligently recites refuge and prayers, etc., one will not produce excellent results. Root (verse): The qualities of the Buddhas are infinite, having destroyed the two obscurations of affliction and knowledge with two abandonments. Possessing eyes, clairvoyance, the ten powers, the doors of dharani, the ten strengths, the four fearlessnesses, and individual wisdom. The eighteen unshared perfections are the Buddha, possessing the Dharmakaya with all excellent aspects. Enjoying the retinue of the ten bhumis.
