The five, such as the stability of the earth, are said to be the power of accumulating merit in the past or the manifest signs of reverence. Furthermore, if explained from the perspective of metaphor and meaning, the agent of both increase and decrease of all the goodness of samsara and nirvana is solely karma, both meritorious and non-meritorious. In the past, King Mandhata, or I Can, offered seven mustard seeds to the Buddha Vipaśyin, and thus became a universal monarch. Having triumphed over the forces of the Four Great Kings, he gained the glory of occupying half of Indra's throne in the Thirty-Three Heavens, but because it is the nature of sinful thoughts to destroy virtue, as soon as he developed a mind of envy towards Indra, he fell back to the human realm like a falling star. The root is: By not meditating, wisdom declines; by increasing arrogance, wealth declines; by extreme hatred, goodness declines; by attachment, true nobility declines. Because of karma, afflictions, and sins, the intelligence that is not disturbed can be employed by the power of wisdom and fortune, and is said in the Ornament to be a sign of accumulating merit. That is to say, for those who are lazy and lack diligence, by not meditating, the previously known wisdom of hearing and thinking, etc., declines. When one is wealthy and arrogance increases due to enjoyment, and it is used for non-meritorious things, wealth declines. Whether it is an enemy or a neutral person, extreme hatred causes goodness to decline. Whether it is oneself or another, attachment to women, food, wealth, etc., causes true nobility, that is, birth in the higher realms, to decline. Because of these, karma, afflictions, and sins, the pure intelligence that is not disturbed can be employed by the power of wisdom and fortune, and is said in the Ornament to be a sign of accumulating merit in the past. This is a continuous explanation with scriptural sources. Moreover, the common factor of merit is the characteristic of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, so what need is there to say for those sentient beings who seek liberation and omniscience? As it is said in the Jataka tales, in the past there was a king named Light Strength, whose son had the strength of form, diligence, patience, wisdom, and merit.

There were five named Power of Merit, each named from their own aspect of virtue, and each clinging to and priding themselves on their own virtue. At that time, Power of Merit said: Without merit, none of the other four powers are of any use, so merit is very important, for all the good qualities of samsara and nirvana are solely the power of merit. Although he said this, the other four brothers each clung to their own views and would not acknowledge it. Then, in order to understand their situation, the father sent them to other lands in ordinary attire. The one with handsome appearance, pleasing to others, lived solely on the enjoyment of joyful gatherings of people. The diligent one could retrieve sandalwood carried away by a raging river, which others could not, and lived solely on the enjoyment arising from his ability. The patient one lived solely on the enjoyment of wages earned from it. The wise one lived solely on the gains from settling disputes between two merchants. When Power of Merit entered the home of a poor man, much wealth, grain, gold, and silver appeared there, and the poor man, recognizing that these were due to the power of Power of Merit, showed him great honor, and his fame spread everywhere. Before long, the queen of that country, who had no son, along with ministers and city leaders, gathered and enthroned Prince Power of Merit as king. Through the power of merit, he brought the realm to a state of happiness. King Power of Clarity heard of these reasons and appointed the young Power of Merit as the heir to the throne. Furthermore, one hundred years after the passing of the Teacher, in the city of Pataliputra (Sanskrit: Pāṭaliputra, today's Patna, India), there was a king named Ashoka, who possessed one-fourth of the glory of a Chakravartin. At first, he followed unwholesome friends and committed many sinful deeds. Later, when he became diligent in accumulating merit, he sent five hundred merchants to obtain treasures for the sake of wealth. They filled ships with jewels, gold, silver, diamonds, beryl, conch shells, coral, and so on, and set sail for their own country. When the ships were in the middle of the ocean, dragons destroyed them, and all the treasures were plundered without exception. The king grew
