Especially for the student who is knowledgeable about the teacher but cannot see the merits, and who thinks that the teacher is inferior to himself, who is arrogant with lineage and wealth, who does not keep vows, who is conceited with accumulated knowledge, etc., no matter how much essence of ripening and liberation is poured into such a flawed vessel, it will not have the slightest effect. If they receive a little bit of material offerings, they will be satisfied with that, and their false faith will not be able to be maintained, and they will show off like the changes of the ground in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In the beginning, because they are too accustomed to ordinary behavior, they cannot enter the path of Dharma, like a wild yak. In the middle, even if the external discipline seems beautiful, hearing cannot cut off the external attachments, and thinking does not consider cause and effect such as doing good and abandoning evil, but hates virtue and pursues this life. Finally, they take the side of sinful friends and strive for non-virtuous deeds such as killing and plundering, and eventually go astray, like savages in the depths of the forest. Moreover, the evil demon fears that even if one sentient being attains Buddhahood, his own territory will be reduced. Therefore, he shoots the hearts of those who are initially unsuitable for teaching with demonic arrows, thereby creating discord between the teacher and the disciple, and in thought and behavior, he makes them oppose the teacher and Dharma friends, and sink into the swamp of degeneration. Root verse: When staying near the holy one, they are eager to escape; wherever they go, sin follows closely; if urged to retreat, the Dharma vanishes; like the tip of a kusha grass blown by the wind. This says that those students who are not suitable for teaching, when staying near the holy one, are eager to escape to other places; wherever they go, they engage in sinful activities such as stealing and deceiving. When the teacher urges them to retreat and practice, the Dharma, which seems outwardly beautiful, vanishes, and all three, hearing, thinking, and meditation, are abandoned due to laziness, like the tip of a kusha grass blown by the wind, without any stability. This also depends on whether the teacher advises them to retreat according to the disciple's capacity, or assigns them to spread the Dharma and benefit beings, or allows them to uphold the Dharma in their own place. If they can do these things, there will be no obstacles, and it will be auspicious. Root verse: A person with a bad character

With deceitful and cunning tongues, serving the lama like attending to a musk elephant, and after obtaining the precious Dharma like musk, instead, with great enthusiasm, they shoot at the lama, breaking their vows. This means that wicked people spend their days with deceitful and cunning thoughts, flaunting their tongues like two-faced individuals, serving the lama like attending to a musk elephant, not out of faith. After obtaining the benefits of liberating Dharma, instead of guarding their vows, they shoot at the lama with great enthusiasm, not even caring about killing the lama, discarding their vows like throwing stones. The root is: For those who have not fully understood, after obtaining the key points of the instructions, they abandon them, and in the end, they are exhausted from searching for various texts, not seeing anything new, and losing everything old. This means that for those who have not fully understood, some, after obtaining the key points of ripening and liberating instructions, do not practice them, but instead abandon them at will. They search for various texts from elsewhere, and in the end, exhausted from searching, they do not see any new profound points, and everything they have heard and practiced before is lost. The root is: Having faith to apply to the true meaning, and the desire to practice Dharma only for this life in appearance, and the foolish and arrogant who are not proficient in either, it is very important to examine the characteristics of these three states. This means entering the Dharma with sincere faith, and practicing Dharma in appearance, similar in form to before, but in reality only for the sake of this life, and the foolish and arrogant who are not proficient in either of these two situations, neither pursuing the next life nor pursuing this life, but just entering the Dharma at will, it is very important to examine the characteristics of these three states. For the first of these three situations, one should follow without reservation, and the latter two should be transformed into the correct path through various skillful means and interdependent connections. The root is: Armor is vast, wisdom is extremely firm, disregarding body and life, respectfully serving. Thus it is said, that such a person who does not protect the vows, can be liberated solely by devotion. This means that the armor-like diligence, from now until the attainment of the state of perfect and complete enlightenment, is the extremely firm wisdom that does not slacken even slightly in the practice of Bodhi, and disregarding body and life.
