Those who boast of being guides are actually demons hindering students from attaining liberation. Root verse: Even if the nature of ordinary individuals is not contradictory, foolish faith carelessly attaches to a place. Those who are filled with offerings of gain and respect are like spiritual friends who are frogs in a well. That is to say, the nature of the holy and the ordinary are not the same. The former, the seven noble riches of the holy are mostly complete and are free from all defilements and views. The latter, although the thoughts and actions of the foolish and ignorant, greed and unseemly actions, and the nature of hypocrisy and wrath, etc., seem not to be contradictory. However, other fools do not understand the reason for this, and with blind faith, they carelessly and hastily attach false faith to a place. That is to say, those ordinary individuals with defects who have been abandoned by the thoughts and actions of the holy, when they wander around like robbers in order to seek gain, become arrogant and complacent due to the respect and offerings of others. For example, like spiritual friends who are frogs in a well. In 《སྐྱེ་བོའི་གསོ་ཐིགས།》 (སྐྱེ་བོའི་གསོ་ཐིགས།) it says that once a frog living in the ocean was thrown by a wave into a well. There was a frog in the well who asked it where it came from, and it said that it came from the great ocean. The frog in the well thought that there was no place bigger than the well it lived in, so it showed it one-third of the well and asked if the ocean was this big? It said it was much bigger than that. It showed it half of the well, etc., and after comparing it, it was no match for the ocean, and the frog in the well felt ashamed. It's like this example. Root verse: Little learning, lax in vows and commitments, low in disposition, yet acting like a high lama. Those mad guides who have cut the rope of love and compassion increase sin. That is to say, those who have only heard a little, lack the merits of the scriptures, are lax in the vows of the three vehicles and the four empowerments, and whose disposition is lower than anyone else, yet rely on gorgeous clothes, wealth, servants, etc., and arrogance, acting like a high lama, pretending to be good. Some of these mad guides who have cut the rope of love and compassion only teach foolish believers how to increase sin.

Mistakes. Root: Especially if one's own merits are not superior, If one relies on fame without Bodhicitta, Like a blind person as a guide is a great mistake, False association wanders in the darkness. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the virtuous, The virtuous deeds of the faithful are in vain, The rare leisure is like a poisonous snake and, Like the shadow of a tree, one will be deceived. Thus it is said, if the disciple himself is not higher in merit than the teacher, and does not possess excellence, if he abandons Bodhicitta and relies on fame and high position without understanding the reason, then it is like entrusting the road to a blind guide, which is a great mistake, a fundamental mistake. Associating with such a spiritual friend will not only not increase merit, but will also be tainted by faults, and even if one associates with a pretense of faith, one will be lost in the darkness of doing good and abandoning evil. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the virtuous from the beginning, then foolish, faithful, and people with little merit, because they rely on a teacher who does not understand the path of non-virtue, will make pure virtuous deeds fruitless. In this way, if one obtains leisure at a certain time, it is like a person carrying a heavy burden walking at night, and a poisonous snake lying on the road, he mistakes it for the shade of a tree, and rests there, and is bitten by the snake, he will be deceived by the evil spiritual friend. If we combine it with a story, it is recorded in the "Frightening Lightning": In the past, there was a monk named "Immaculate Conduct" who only pretended to be a yogi on the surface. Because there were no teachers who were proficient in this path, the hundred thousand retinues of those teachers requested him to inherit the position of the teacher. That monk became arrogant because of his high position, and without understanding, he wrongly practiced similar yogic behaviors, and as a result, that monk, together with his hundred thousand retinues, were reborn as Rudras for countless kalpas. Thus, without empowerment, transmission, and oral instructions, one accumulates a large amount of learning and thinking, but because of wrong thinking, one despises cause and effect. If those practitioners who only focus on clinging to emptiness with dry views and hold wrong views occupy the position of the teacher, then the explanation will also
