Like being friendly to everyone, those who act according to the Dharma should avoid thoughts and actions that are too close or too hostile to anyone, high or low, and always remain constant. Because excessive familiarity leads to boredom, which brings suffering, if one can choose a peaceful place, a place that does not arouse jealousy and inner conflict, then everyone living there will become friendly and intimate. Root Verse: Even if one makes a lot of noise like sentient beings, the goodness or badness of speech depends on his mind. For those who do not act like rocks, there is no place vow. This means that even if one repeats and makes a lot of noise like sentient beings, no matter what good or bad one says, one should be like having no joy or sorrow. Like someone who treats the eight worldly dharmas equally, his mind does not follow the praise and criticism of others, for practitioners who are like rocks, there is no vow of good or bad places. Root Verse: Those who behave like Brahma, and those who focus on the meaning of meditation, no matter how unsteady they become, they rely on places and friends to distinguish between high and low. This means that those who are ordained and behave like Brahma, and those who consider themselves practitioners, focusing on the meaning of meditation and clinging to discipline and meditation, before their practice becomes firm, merely pursuing superficial goodness, no matter what kind of monks they are, they will rely on places and friends of love and hate, thereby exposing their own shortcomings, like being high and low at times. Brahma means Nirvana. Because it is practiced for its purpose, it is called Brahmacharya. Root Verse: The teacher allows giving to create merit for others, and oneself will not lose asceticism, beggars regard it as a wish-fulfilling jewel, only alms that are in accordance with the Dharma are proper.

It is just to treat equally. Root verse: Living very impurely, stealing by means of methods, seeking gain by means of gain, flattering and pretending, measuring by gain, these five wrong livelihoods will defile the conduct of the upright. Therefore, a good dwelling and a good life, good friends and good deeds can inspire courage. Here, the five wrong livelihoods specifically pointed out are: In order to receive charity, repeating words of poverty in front of others, or hiding one's own food and clothing, stealing all the gains with an impure way of life in the guise of poverty. Seeking gain by means of gain is: Sending out small amounts of food, drink, and wealth, and using various methods to exchange for more returns. Flattery is: Skillfully proclaiming one's own various virtues, hiding one's own shortcomings, falsely accumulating vast good deeds, deceiving others in order to obtain wealth. Pretending is: While one's own precepts are not pure, showing off the three conducts of tranquility, gentleness, and uprightness in front of others, or pretending to be indifferent to the eight worldly dharmas, showing off vulgar, unpretentious, and dilapidated behaviors to seek wealth. Measuring by gain is: Complaining that the offerings made by the patrons during rituals and recitations are too small, or thinking that reciting just this little bit requires this much offering, like doing business. Even more so, using meat and alcohol to lure in order to seek wealth, although the Buddha forbids these two kinds of charity, if one uses them recklessly, it will defile the conduct of the Buddhas of the past and their followers, the upright. Therefore, the dwelling should be good, in a place without obstacles, the life should be good, not mixed with the five wrong livelihoods, good friends should practice virtue, good deeds should be diligent in virtue, etc., one should encourage oneself. Root verse: In order to perfect the qualities of all trainings, one should rely on a superior individual. Just as in the forests of Malaya, ordinary trees that drift about at will will also emit fragrance like sandalwood with moist branches and leaves. Whoever one relies on, one will follow. It means that from taking refuge onwards, until attaining liberation, the one who knows all the methods of training is the virtuous friend.
