Through cultivation, one sees and abandons. Having abandoned four hundred and twelve faults, and directly realizing the supreme wisdom that knows cessation and non-arising, one desires to attain liberation. Both the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika schools cultivate selflessness and illusion as antidotes to the three poisons during the path of meditation. The specific antidotes for each are: for attachment, cultivating the eight impure substances and skeletons; for hatred, cultivating loving-kindness; for ignorance, cultivating the forward and reverse order of dependent origination. For conceptual thoughts, one measures the number of breaths exhaled and inhaled, and cultivates without distraction. Therefore, cultivating selflessness means cultivating the meaning of the cessation of the object and the subject, the cessation that does not perceive anything. For ignorance and dullness, one focuses the mind on a lamp on the crown of the head. By doing so, even if one's faculties are inferior or middling, one can attain the fruit in this very life through great diligence. Some Bodhisattvas of sharp faculties, through the power of having previously traversed the five paths, believe that they can perfect the five paths in a single session. Moreover, from the perspective of the Hearer Vehicle, because one's own path is small in mind and large in practice, one thinks that only Hearers and Solitary Buddhas can be accomplished, let alone mantra, and even the Great Vehicle cannot be accommodated in the mind. Therefore, the Teacher, skilled in means, established the vehicles of the three types of beings. The nature of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle is: having become proficient in study and contemplation of the Hearer Vehicle's pitaka, being born in an age after that life when there are no Buddhas or Hearers, and without a teacher, the method of manifesting the fruit in the last life is the nature of realizing one and a half selflessnesses. The definition is: not for the sake of many sentient beings, but desiring to become a Buddha alone. The necessity is: to obtain the small Bodhi that liberates from samsara. The fruit is the two Arhats. The classification is twofold: living in flocks like parrots, and dwelling alone like rhinoceroses. The former, having understood the faults of dependent origination in the forward order and the virtues of dependent origination in the reverse order, cuts off the root. Based on the realization of one and a half selflessnesses, at the end of the path of joining and the path of meditation, one directly realizes the knowledge of cessation and non-arising, thereby attaining the Arhat fruit. The latter, for all phenomena encompassed by the two truths, cultivates dependent origination in the forward order, thereby abandoning all subtle defilements of the three realms. The view is also the same as the former. That is, outwardly clinging to the dharma self, and to

If the clinging to "I" is categorized, there are two types. The clinging to a person as "I" and "mine" is called the clinging to a person and the clinging to phenomena. The Hearers do not understand the latter, the clinging to phenomena. The Solitary Realizers understand that there is no external clinging to the former and the latter, but they do not understand the absence of internal clinging. The clinging to phenomena refers to meditating on the fact that all external objects lack inherent existence, and that the consciousness that clings internally is also emptiness, devoid of the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing. This latter is solely the realization of the Great Vehicle. For both Hearers and Solitary Realizers, eight lower grounds are taught, starting with the ground of seeing white phenomena. Based on these, one attains the fruit of Stream-enterer, Once-returner, Non-returner, and Arhat. Each of these is divided into two states, entering and abiding, hence they are known as the four pairs and eight individuals. For Bodhisattvas, the statement that there are four fruits of asceticism in the ten grounds is the establishment of the system of the Great Omniscient One. Among these, Arhatship is the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements and the non-arising of future rebirths. The exhaustion of defilements means abiding in the realm where there are no remaining aggregates and where all consciousness and conceptual thoughts are ceased, and abiding there for the duration of the previously accumulated merit, eventually being born in pure lands such as Sukhavati, and being inspired by the compassion of the Buddhas, one ultimately attains Buddhahood. Root verses: The root of all dependent phenomena is ignorance. From this arise actions, consciousness, name and form. From this arise the six sense sources. From this arise contact, from this arise feeling. From this arise craving, from craving arises grasping. From this arises becoming, from becoming arises birth. If there is birth, there is poverty due to desire, and sorrow, aging, death, and other sufferings. Because of the cessation of birth, everything ceases. The profound dependent arising of cause and effect is the treasury of the words of the Victorious One who speaks the truth. This means that due to ignorance, actions arise. Due to actions, consciousness arises. Due to consciousness, name and form arise. Similarly, in the way of dependent origination, due to birth, aging, sickness, and death arise. Due to these, sorrow, lamentation, crying, unpleasantness, and so on arise. Similarly, due to the cessation of ignorance, actions and others also cease. Ignorance is the self-awareness of each individual.
