Suffering continues until exhaustion, but the power of Avalokiteśvara will surely protect. Even if sentient beings are born in the hell realms, the eight hot hells and the eight cold hells, along with the eighteen near-by and temporary hells, they will experience unbearable hot and cold suffering until the karmic imprints of their past evil deeds are exhausted. The one who has the power and ability to protect them is the great compassionate lord, the noble Avalokiteśvara. Therefore, it is crucial to meditate and recite his mantra. Furthermore, the compassion that is without object, like the mind that is free from grasping at self and other, is the compassion that does not focus on the three spheres. (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ मणि पद्मे हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, Literal Chinese Meaning: Om Mani Padme Hum) The power of the six syllables cuts through the precipice of the six realms. From the empty, evil realms of samsara, it leads to primordial purity, capable of guiding beings to the Buddha's pure land. This is the essence of great compassion, the six-syllable mantra. May all lords and subjects keep this in mind. The merit of reciting this six-syllable mantra, the essence of great compassion, even once, is like the multiplying power of a lotus seed, and like the abundant increase from a single sesame seed. Although the number and measure of these can be grasped, the benefit of the six syllables is inconceivable. Just as in the salty ocean, the drops of water from the many rivers and streams that flow into it can be counted, the benefit of reciting the six syllables is beyond words. Even if one were to pray to a wish-fulfilling jewel and count the grains that fall from the heavy rain over twelve years, no one could count the measure of the six syllables' benefit; it would only cause fatigue. Although one could count every single hair on all sentient beings who have become animals, how could one possibly describe the benefit of the six syllables? (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ मणि पद्मे हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, Literal Chinese Meaning: Om Mani Padme Hum) This six-syllable mantra, the vajra essence, is the essence of great compassion. Just as a vajra iron mountain, solid and strong, would eventually be worn away if wiped once every eon with a Kashika cloth, the merit of reciting the six syllables even once will never reach an end. Furthermore, the accumulation of offerings in this world, offering to all the Buddhas, is surpassed by the merit of reciting the six syllables once. (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ मणि पद्मे हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, Literal Chinese Meaning: Om Mani Padme Hum) Thus, if one recites this essence of great compassion one hundred and eight times each day, one will not be reborn in the three lower realms in the future.
