If we ourselves are to be the ones who protect sentient beings, then what do we think about killing animals for the sake of enjoying flesh and blood? How much benefit can it bring to the hungry ghosts and hell beings? Therefore, in the vicinity of the retreat center, slaughtering livestock, fighting, joking, making noise, and other behaviors that are intolerable to both oneself and others are prohibited. Inside as well, the retreatants generally should be free from arrogance, pride, jealousy, hatred, and especially should not deviate even slightly from the guru's instructions. Know that the essence of the vows of mantra is also contained therein. However, knowingly violating them and ignorantly reversing what should be adopted and rejected, the former is a greater fault and must be refuted. In general, for those who hide their own faults of body, speech, and mind from others, it is better to reveal them oneself than to have the guru say them, which can lead to hatred and even become a source of wrong views. If one does not establish a method of self-discipline, then in the retreat room, superficially reciting some mantras, paying some fees for Dharma instruments and musical instruments, and counting the years and months in this way is deceiving oneself and simultaneously deceiving the Dharma and sentient beings. Therefore, it is very important to cherish the vows that are consistent inside and out. Moreover, each person should carefully consider the purpose of entering the retreat center. Generally, it is to cut off worldly affairs and permanently sever distractions; especially to ensure the stability of the generation stage and completion stage. If it is necessary to distinguish between mind and wisdom and to make the mind capable, then, if one thinks that there is no seer and seen, no meditator and meditated upon, while increasing this understanding, one allows the thoughts of the past, present, and future to flow like a river, following them, even if one recites many deity mantras, it is difficult to produce results. Therefore, before gaining a firm understanding, do not mix recitation and meditation, and do not connect two aspects before making progress in one aspect. In the main practice of the session, rest in the nature of reality itself, and in the breaks between sessions, use recitation as an auxiliary, which will increase the benefit greatly, as has been proven by experience. However, for the tradition of Dzogchen in our lineage, from a long time ago,

Those who boast that they can mix recitation with meditation without being distracted, whether or not they have completely cut off distraction, are like those who have not seen Lhasa but think they are proficient in pilgrimage guides. Therefore, for beginners, if they do not make efforts in difficult abiding and study and practice, and do not feel ashamed of themselves, it is like what Je Tsongkhapa said: "Long-term rental of caves, crows are proficient in Vajra recitation." Jetsun Milarepa and Gampopa also taught, "Even if the body is in the marketplace, the mind should be in the mountains." They emphasized that maintaining mindfulness is very important. And "Even if the body is in the mountains, the mind wanders in the marketplace." Those who only focus on silent retreats are like falling into the fundamental ignorance (Tibetan: འཁྲུལ་པ་ནག་འབྱམས།) of Samantabhadra (Tibetan: ཀུན་བྱེད་རྒྱལ་པོ།), unable to abide in a state of non-distraction, so mindfulness is very important. From the beginning of practice, until abiding in the place of practice, it is important to value mindfulness alone. However, beginners think "cannot forget the mind," this is the mindfulness of subject and object; from there, because the habit is stable, so that even from Great Perfection (Tibetan: རྩེ་གཅིག་ཆེན་པོ།) downwards, they cannot abandon the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, this is the mindfulness of attachment to experience; mindfulness itself is perfected as the essence of what is to be remembered, merging into one, this is the mindfulness of realization; even still looking at one as two, and directing it to the goal, this is the state of losing realization, etc., these subtle details need to be learned from the mouth of the Lama. In these situations, many signs of accomplishment of ultimate realization have emerged in this land of Bhutan (Tibetan: བྷོ་ཊ།). In particular, Milarepa said to Gampopa, "Son, when you practice Mahamudra, do not strive for virtue with body and speech, otherwise there is a danger of losing non-conceptual wisdom." Just as these holy ones say in unison, knowing that the mind is the most important of the three doors of body, speech, and mind, one must tame one's own mind. The meaning and result of all generation stage, completion stage, and recitation depend on this. Apart from that, it is difficult to ultimately exhaust all phenomena of relative truth. As Padmasambhava said, "To achieve the ultimate Buddhahood in one lifetime, one does not need to be proficient in many sutras and tantras." In this short life of the degenerate age, knowledge is as boundless as the sky, difficult to measure, and moreover, study and contemplation mixed with attachment and aversion will also lead to lower realms.
