If there are situations where minor precepts of discipline can be relaxed, then, for the sake of harmonious coexistence in the city, villages are abandoned; for the sake of self-preservation, residential lands are given up and people move to other places; and to prevent harm to one's own body, speech, and mind, one would not hesitate to sacrifice even one's own life. If someone says this place is not suitable to live, then, like the earth that can bear any joy or sorrow, in order to protect the flourishing fragrance of the Dharma from declining, one should endure various hardships for the sake of the Dharma, and be indifferent to the oppression that others find difficult to bear. Regarding profound meanings, one should not be afraid or give up, thinking that these are extremely difficult to understand; these are the three (types of patience). Those who are terrified of entering the inescapable black prison of hell, entwined by vines darker than the darkness of the manifestation of the sins of anger and hatred that have made the mind extremely rigid, should never give an opportunity for anger. This is a summary explanation of the opposing factors of patience. Moreover, the objects of harm are like thorns covering the forest; it is impossible to subdue them one by one, and even if some are subdued, they will grow back and spread. Therefore, the sole creator of resentment and anger is self-grasping; if self-grasping is subdued, then the asceticism of patience is the true cause of nirvana, and therefore it will become beneficial to oneself. Like this, extremely harsh contact, that is, the pain of the arrows of words such as anger, hatred, and criticism piercing the hearts of people, does it not exist? Even if it does not exist, due to the fault of the proximate cause of accepting harsh words, both the dependent and the depended upon will be tormented as they fall into confusion. In this life, when the phenomena of existence are dominant, the causes and effects of harm are both limitless, meaning that they often arise from oneself. For example, if sound and words do not come from one's own mouth, then sound and words will not come from rocks. If it arises from oneself, then there is no object of harm. Therefore, one first speaks hateful words, etc., and then is suddenly called upon by external circumstances. If one examines closely, one will find that it is not a great harm but a great benefit, because it is the act of harming that is the object of cultivating patience.
