There is no opportunity to allow it, solely because it is unwholesome. Even so, in the precepts of the Bodhisattva, seeking peace with the hope of attaining Buddhahood for oneself, and for the sake of others, abandoning difficult deeds, not even cherishing one's own body and life, and for the sake of others, whatever benefit, great or small, that one does not accomplish due to discouragement, all of these are said to be causes of downfall. For those who are new to the Mahayana path, the Bodhisattvas who have newly entered, it is most important to cultivate the mind from higher to higher. First, taking the vows of individual liberation, for other Mahayana practitioners who are not pure, if they mainly guard the two vows, there will be many obstacles, therefore, the ordained Bodhisattva is special, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras. The meaning of Bodhisattva's own ground is that in most Mahayana treatises, regarding the precepts, there is no clear explanation with rituals like the individual liberation vows. Those who have previously practiced the three vows and have great mental strength, their main reliance is on intention, like King Indrabuti. Those who rely on the lay life, the householders, on top of the vows of upasaka and upasika, constantly guarding the two Bodhicittas of aspiration and action, are called upasaka Bodhisattvas. For those who are ordained, whichever vows of bhikshu and bhikshuni they take and abide in, guarding the two Bodhicittas of aspiration and action is their own ground of discipline. In terms of classification, there are also five types of upasakas: guarding one aspect, such as abandoning any one of the four root downfalls like killing; on top of that, abandoning stealing, possessing one aspect; on top of that, abandoning lying, guarding most of it. On top of that, if one abandons sexual misconduct completely, then one is considered an upasaka who has completely guarded the precepts. Abandoning the four root downfalls and alcohol, all five, is called a celibate upasaka. Among the ten precepts of the ordained, it is permitted for the upasaka to accept gold and silver for the sake of raising children, and on top of that, dancing and garlands are counted as one of the minor faults.

It is called the eight-branch law. A layperson like Chandra Gomi guards it constantly without any restrictions for as long as they live. The novice monk's precepts include: 1. Killing; 2. Stealing; 3. Non-celibacy; 4. Lying; 5. Adulterated alcohol, etc.; 6. Dancing, etc.; 7. Wearing ornate garlands, etc.; 8. Making large and high beds; 9. Eating after noon, also eating food in the afternoon; 10. Accepting gold and silver, etc. Renouncing these ten and keeping the eight-branch law is even more excellent. For a female novice, in addition to these ten, there are twelve practices to avoid, such as touching men, etc. Because for any kind of woman, desire and other defilements are great, it is important to strictly examine for about two years whether they can persevere or not. For a monk, if these four root downfalls—unchaste conduct, killing, taking what is not given, and lying—and the remaining thirteen sanghavasesa offenses occur, then in terms of bedding, food, etc., using the leftovers after the elderly, middle-aged, and young, is sanghavasesa. In his continuum, there still remains a remnant of pure discipline. Relying on the Sangha, whatever transgressions are committed, because it is called sanghavasesa, it can be purified if confessed, but because one is in a lower position than the Sangha and uses the leftovers of food and drink, it is called sanghavasesa. The first sanghavasesa is: experiencing the pleasure of desire in one's own or another's limbs and ejaculating. The second is: desiring a woman with lust, experiencing pleasure by directly touching her body or parts of her body such as hair, without any obstruction. The third is: speaking obscene words with lustful thoughts to a woman who understands the meaning, and she understands it. The fourth is: desiring to engage in sexual intercourse with a lustful woman, saying with a respectful attitude, "Associating with me is the best," and the other person understands and comprehends the meaning. The fifth is: men and women other than oneself can engage in sexual intercourse; because they desire to touch each other, oneself or an appointed person conveys information through three means, causing the two to meet and engage in sexual intercourse.
