Diligently engaging in offerings of lamps, generosity, and other virtuous deeds, and through that power, stabilizing the strength of shamatha-vipashyana samadhi on the path of union, thereby manifesting the path of liberation, this is known as the dhyana that discerns meaning. Above the first ground, the noble samadhi is the part of the alaya-vijnana that is unindicated, namely the four dhyanas and the four formless absorptions. Because it is without outflows, it is the Tathagata's virtuous dhyana, and its essence is the mind repeatedly holding with mindfulness within. The cause for accomplishing these dhyanas is continuous mindfulness, that is, diligence with unremitting mindfulness. If the five objects of the senses, etc., are distracted, then they are brought back again. Its function is to generate happiness in body and mind, and also to accomplish miracles within the scope of one's own power. The result is obtaining the abhijna of the Shravakas, etc. This is what was said above. The preparatory stage or preparation for the first dhyana is merely thinking about any experience of bliss, clarity, or non-conceptuality, saying, "This is it," and examining its nature. When it becomes absorbed into emptiness and enters the main stage, there is no thought, only joy and bliss in contemplation, and only the presence of bliss. In the remaining three, gradually abandoning attachment to one's own place, in the fourth stage, nothing is held in mind, that is, there is neither thought nor contemplation. The saying "the former by the former" means that the first dhyana is for the second, joy and bliss, and when one is fully endowed with the first dhyana within; the second is for the third, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, and possessing the third dhyana; the third is for the fourth, neither suffering nor pleasure, equanimity, mindfulness, and possessing the fourth dhyana, the latter is the proximate cause of the latter, and is known as the basis of the noble path. On this basis, the dhyana that generates all qualities is that which is combined with skillful means, great compassion, and wisdom. It causes one to possess many samadhis, manifests the meaning of all things, and abandons the subtle grasping and clinging of samahita and post-samahita, which are the same as wisdom and things. The extensive post-attainment that arises from samahita exists in all up to the seventh ground. This is the view of the previous great ones. Therefore, people should...

The stages of meditation have been explained. Now, the determination of the higher wisdom training is: All samādhis arise from the practice of meditation, or the wisdom that arises from the real and the subsequent, or the wisdom that arises from hearing, thinking, and meditating, in order to accomplish the three perfect insights. Through its function, it can destroy the collection of afflictions, and understand the Dharma and non-Dharma, that is, the conventional truth, passing from the city of existence without sorrow. The six perfections, such as generosity, are also superior from above, so relying on the Prajñāpāramitā is the best. Moreover, here, before not exceeding the ground of ordinary beings, if one does not rely on the wisdom arising from hearing, then the merits of thinking and meditation will not exist, and one will be lost in the path of obstacles and deviations. Therefore, the wisdom of hearing is said to be the root of all things. The measurable Dharma, that is, the twelve parts of scripture, and the names of the eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma, also need to be measured by the three measuring wisdoms. It is necessary to measure the two types of straight meaning and definitive meaning, and the four types of hidden meaning. That is to say, the nature of all Dharmas, that is, suchness, is the nature of non-proliferation and non-discrimination. The gate of liberation, emptiness (Tibetan: སྟོང་པ་ཉིད།, Sanskrit: śūnyatā, Devanagari: शून्यता, Romanization: shunyata, literal meaning: emptiness), signlessness (Tibetan: མཚན་མ་མེད་པ།, Sanskrit: animitta, Devanagari: अनिमित्त, Romanization: animitta, literal meaning: signlessness) and wishlessness (Tibetan: སྨོན་པ་མེད་པ།, Sanskrit: apraṇihita, Devanagari: अप्रणिहित, Romanization: apranihita, literal meaning: wishlessness), these three abidings are definitive meaning. Dharmas, that is, entering the path of conventional appearance, therefore, after measuring with wisdom, like this, like that, making assumptions, this is the straight path. Like this, in these two ways, what should be trusted and what should not be trusted in the straight meaning and the definitive meaning? That is to say, if one can definitely know what these two are for, that is the key to observing all the scriptures. In order to clearly explain their nature, and in order to understand the intention of the meaning, the two types of intentional and hidden intentional are explained. First, intentional is: making a slight assumption, and also explaining it slightly, not only for the sake of guiding those who should be tamed, saying to someone who commits powerful sins, this action of yours seems to be good for the perfection of food and enjoyment, thus causing him to have a slight doubt, this is only intentional, very important.
