From beginning to end, it is entirely non-virtuous, therefore there is no time for permission. Even so, in the vows of the Bodhisattva, hoping to attain Buddhahood for one's own sake and seeking peace, and for the sake of others, not abandoning difficult tasks, not even cherishing one's own body and life, and for the sake of others, no matter how great or small the benefit, not giving up due to discouragement, whatever it may be, is said to be a cause of downfall. For the initial practitioners, the Bodhisattvas who newly enter the Mahayana, it is most important to use their minds from higher to higher, so first taking the discipline of the Pratimoksha vows. If impure other Mahayana practitioners mainly guard the two vows, there will be many obstacles, therefore ordained Bodhisattvas are special, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras. Bodhisattva's own ground means that in most Mahayana scriptures, there is no clear explanation of the characteristics of the Pratimoksha vows through rituals for the vows. Those who have previously studied the three vows and have great mental strength rely mainly on thought, like Dharma King Indrabhuti. Those householders who rely on the lay way should always protect the two Bodhicitta of aspiration and engagement on top of the vows of Upasaka and Upavasatha, and are known as Upasaka Bodhisattvas. For the ordained, whichever vows of Shramanera, Bhikshu, and Bhikshuni are taken and abide in, protecting the two Bodhicitta of aspiration and engagement is the discipline of their own ground. In terms of divisions, there are five types of Upasakas: guarding one, such as abandoning any one of the four root downfalls like killing; on top of that, abandoning stealing, possessing one part; on top of that, abandoning lying, guarding most of it. On top of that, if one completely abandons sexual misconduct including sexual activity, they are considered Upasakas who completely guard. Abandoning the four root downfalls and alcohol, and all five, is known as a Brahmachari Upasaka. Among the ten precepts of the ordained, accepting gold and silver is permitted for Upasakas for the sake of raising children, and on top of that, dance and garlands are both minor flaws.

As for how to count them, there is what is known as the eight-branch precepts. Whenever one continuously protects them for as long as one lives, that is a layperson like Candragomin. The novice monk's precepts, killing living beings, 1. stealing the property of others, 2. engaging in impure conduct, 3. lying, 4. adulterated alcohol and so on, 5. dancing and so on, 6. wearing ornate garlands and so on, 7. decorating high beds, 8. refraining from eating after noon, and eating food in the afternoon as well, 9. taking gold and silver and so on, 10. abandoning these ten objects of training and upholding the eight-branch precepts is even more excellent. For a female novice, in addition to these ten, there are the antidotes to the twelve actions such as touching a male, because for any kind of woman, afflictions such as desire are stronger, so it is important to carefully observe for about two years to see if she can persevere. For a monk, impure conduct, killing living beings, taking what is not given, lying, these four root downfalls, and the remaining thirteen sanghādisesa offenses, if these occur, bedding and food, etc., the leftovers after the elderly, middle-aged, and young, are sanghādisesa offenses. In his continuum, there still remains a remnant of pure vows. Relying on the sangha, for those transgressions that are committed due to violating the precepts, although they can be purified by confessing for the sake of the name "sanghādisesa," because one is in a lower position than the sangha and consumes leftover food, it is called sanghādisesa. The first sanghādisesa of emission is: experiencing the pleasure desired in one's own or another's limbs, and ejaculating. The second is: desiring a woman, directly touching her body or parts of her body such as hair without any barrier, and experiencing pleasure. The third is: speaking obscene words out of desire to a woman who understands the meaning, and she understands. The fourth is: for the sake of engaging in sexual intercourse with a desired woman, under the guise of veneration, saying, "Associating with me and desire is the best," and the other person understands and comprehends the meaning. The fifth is: a man and woman other than oneself, who are capable of intercourse, desiring to touch each other, oneself or an appointed person conveys a message through three means, and the two meet.
