The so-called "attaining the state of..." refers to appearing to have faith and devotion in a contrived way at that time, but like the changing of the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, they flaunt impermanence. These are the characteristics of students to be abandoned: First, even if they are led onto the path by doing good and abandoning evil, they will be lost due to evil thoughts and will not enter the path of Dharma, just like a wild yak being put into a fence. Second, even if they are urged to study listening and thinking, they hate asceticism and desire to focus only on this life. Finally, they imitate the actions of sinful friends, side with them, and eventually go astray, like savages at the edge of the forest. Those double-minded students, when they are with the holy lama, are eager to flee to another country; when they are clearly inclined to go to any other place, they seize upon sin. The holy protector specifically urges them to go to secluded places and strive for practice, but when the Dharma collapses, they will be at a loss as to what to do, like the tip of a kusha grass that follows the wind, sometimes bending east and sometimes west. They have not grasped either the worldly or the Dharma, but with a bad character and hypocritical actions, they use flattering, stretching and contracting divisive tongues, taking the lama as a sandalwood elephant, approaching hypocritically like musk, thereby obtaining the benefits of precious Dharma such as the teachings of maturation and liberation, and then again reviling the lama, delighting in wrong views, etc., throwing away the stages of vows like throwing stones into water. Because of the strong force of non-virtue, all things that are not controlled by one's own mind abandon the key points of the teachings of the generation stage and completion stage that have already been obtained, and still search for various kinds of documents. In the end, after exhaustion, they do not see anything new that is beneficial to themselves, and all that was before disappears. That is to say, it is important to apply faith to the correct meaning, and the desire to achieve this life in appearance, and the neutral path that is not beneficial to both, that is, neither to the worldly nor to the Dharma, and to examine the characteristics of these three and distinguish them separately. Among the three kinds of diligence, here it refers to armor-like diligence.

Do not let diligence be controlled by laziness, not even for a moment; be diligent in the Dharma, and let your wisdom be very firm. Do not consider your body and life, and for the sake of the Lama, spare no effort in serving him. Accept everything the Lama says as if it were the Buddha's teaching. Do not think that you cannot do it, and do not be afraid of hardship. Such a person can be liberated by devotion alone. Respect faith, wisdom, hearing, great compassion, the three vows, and the place of vows. Subdue the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and be free from hypocrisy and deceit. Be broad-minded, generous, and possess pure appearance and a sense of shame. Be wise by strictly guarding against thoughts and actions that contradict the three secrets of the Lama's body, speech, and mind. No matter how the Lama scolds, do not be angry, just as a fine horse does not resist no matter how many times it is whipped. Even if you are sent many times to deliver messages, be like a boat, not feeling tired from going back and forth, and do not hesitate. Whether high or low, if you are assigned any good or bad work, be like a bridge, bearing all good and bad. No matter what kind of work you are told to do, whether soft or rough, endure cold and heat even if you are tormented, just as silk or fabric is pressed with red-hot iron, fire, or water on a frame. Listen to the Lama's teachings as if you were your own slave. Abandon self-esteem and arrogance, and remain humble, like a sweeper or a broom in a garbage heap. Abandon pride, like a bull whose horns have been cut off. Serve the Lama in this way, as it is said in the scriptures, which is very important. If you have wealth, offer it to the fourth jewel—the Lama. Whenever service is needed, use your body and speech at any time, and do not let any action become meaningless, because among the three ways of pleasing the Lama—offering wealth, serving with body and speech, and practicing—practice is the best. Do not look at any of the Lama's actions with a wrong view, because among the yogis in the holy land of India, most eat impure things, seek lineage, or focus on work that sustains their livelihood, such as agriculture and servitude.
