Just as the land cannot grow any kind of fruit, because one's own continuum remains in an ordinary state, the guide lacks the qualities of a teacher; even if there is not the slightest contradiction with the nature of ordinary people, that is, anyone whose thoughts and actions are ordinary, they are casually placed in a position by the faith of foolish relatives, etc. There are also some who are filled with the wealth and respectful offerings obtained by others through ignorant attachment; there are also some who are very self-righteous, like a frog in a well, arrogant teachers puffed up with pride; there are also some who are not familiar with general listening and especially the history of their own tradition, and the three vows in general, especially the vows, have become broken, violated, and fragmented, becoming dissolute. Although the capacity of the lineage is very low, no different from ordinary people, they use ornaments, splendor, expensive items, etc. as a means to disguise themselves, and their behavior is like ascending to a high position, making a false show of grandeur. There are also some who have lost love and compassion for any kind of inferior people, like a madman's guide, from these non-virtuous friends, sin will increase. In particular, the three of listening, contemplation, and meditation in general, and especially altruistic intention, are only the same as oneself, with no qualities exceeding oneself. Even without the mind of enlightenment, they are supported by their great fame, just as if a blind person is expected to be a leader or guide, and is allowed to guide the way, it would be a great mistake, because in the absence of trust, hypocritical association will lead to wandering in the darkness. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the holy person one wishes to rely on, foolish believers will waste their accumulation of merit, and the opportunity of leisure and endowment is only obtained once. If we use a story as an analogy, once there was a person carrying a heavy burden, who went to a forest on the slope of a moon-shaped mountain, where there was a huge poisonous snake stretched out, and that person mistakenly took the shadows of two trees as a place to rest, and was deceived like that. The lama who has exhausted all the faults mentioned in the sutras and tantras, and who is endowed with all the qualities, is the embodiment of the wisdom and compassion of all the Buddhas, appearing in the form of a person for the sake of taming beings, and is therefore the supreme root of all attainments, both supreme and common.

Therefore, if (the guru) is consistent with all actions, etc., in the sense of honesty, then in the ultimate sense, it contradicts the norms of all those who have the thoughts and actions of the eight worldly concerns. Because he has profound intentions, he is more excellent than all those who are accustomed to the realm of terminology, and he is skilled in cutting off the dualistic clinging of doubt, and he can endure the hardships of heretical asceticism and suffering that others practice. Such a noble protector is like a great ship that liberates from the ocean of existence. Because he will not go astray on the supreme path of liberation and omniscience, he is like the helmsman of a merchant sailing to an island in the ocean. Like a great rain of nectar that gathers the fires of karma and affliction. Like the sun and moon that dispel the darkness of ignorance. Because the burden is extremely heavy, it is like the earth. Like a wish-fulfilling tree that is the source of benefit and happiness. Like a good vase that contains all the treasures of the sutras and tantras. It is even more excellent than a wish-fulfilling jewel that produces all needs and desires. Towards all beings, high and low, he is free from closeness and aversion, and treats them with equal love, like parents. Surpassing worldly love, it is like a vast and swift river of compassion. Not just arrogance, but like an unshakeable mountain of joy, like a cloud of equanimity undisturbed by the thoughts of closeness, aversion, love, and hatred. Such a lama, a virtuous friend, if the qualities of his three secrets are equal to all the Buddhas, then even if harm is done to him, if (one) is connected with the path to attain happiness, then for that person who relies on him with unwavering faith and respect, the good fruits of the glory and qualities of higher realms and definite goodness will surely fall like rain. Therefore, the supreme guru who shows the path to liberation is like a doctor to a sick person, a farewell to a guest, an arrow to a fearful person, a helmsman to a merchant, and an oar to a boatman. Because one cannot withstand the fear of the enemy of birth, death, and affliction, one should rely on (the guru) for refuge. The one who closely relies on him is the fortunate disciple, and those who are contrary to this are not. Like a cracked vessel, the so-called essence (Dharma) does not benefit a disciple who has broken his vows, and those evil disciples are satisfied with just giving a little wealth.
