'Has not been seen in all these worlds.' And the Bhagavan (Blessed One) declared: 'Friends, whoever among Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (great beings), such as Vajrapani (the one holding the vajra), reveres in this way with their mind, will have paid homage to nine thousand kotis (hundreds of millions) of Tathagatas (Thus-Gone Ones).' And Vajrapani said: 'Any demon who, upon hearing my name, does not flee, I shall split their head with a fierce vajra.' And so forth, the praises from the tantras are immeasurable. Similarly, in the Sutra of the Arrangement of the Basket (Za ma tog bkod pa'i mdo), it says: 'Avalokiteshvara (the one who looks down with compassion) is the protector of those without protection, the refuge of those without refuge, bestowing fearlessness upon those who are fearful and terrified, becoming a lamp for those in darkness, becoming an umbrella for those afflicted by the sun, medicine for those afflicted by illness, a mother and father to those who are suffering, showing the path to Nirvana (liberation from suffering) for those born without support. Those who remember the name of Avalokiteshvara are blessed. They are liberated from the suffering of old age and death, become the last in samsara (cyclic existence), are born in Sukhavati (the Pure Land of Bliss), listen to the Dharma (teachings) from Amitabha (Infinite Light), and always abide there.' Furthermore, in the Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma (Dam pa'i chos pad+ma dkar po), it says: 'Countless sentient beings who experience suffering, tormented by various fears such as fire, water, rakshasas (flesh-eating demons), executioners, wild animals, etc., if they hear the name of Avalokiteshvara, they will be liberated from those fears. Even if this three-thousandfold world is filled with yakshas (nature spirits), rakshasas, and executioners, packed so tightly that even Vajra Mountain (rdo rje ri rab) could not penetrate, if they remember the name of Avalokiteshvara, they will not be able to move even a single hair. Those who are seized by the intense suffering of karma (action) and kleshas (afflictions), by remembering the name, will certainly be liberated from it.' The praise of Avalokiteshvara is vast. If someone were to pay homage to and hold the names of as many Buddhas as there are grains of sand in sixty-two Ganges Rivers, and offer all necessities such as clothing and alms to those Buddhas, compared to someone who merely pays homage once to Avalokiteshvara and holds his name, the merit of the two is equal, with neither being superior or more excellent. The merit of holding his name is not easily exhausted even in hundreds of millions of kalpas (eons). Thus, the merit is immeasurable. Avalokiteshvara appears in various forms, from Buddha to ordinary beings, to tame beings in whatever way is appropriate. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
