Foolish conceptualizations, clinging to 'self' (Skt. ātma, meaning 'self') and external and internal phenomena as if they were real, cause them to grow as if they were truly established. Because one does not see the alaya-vijñana (Skt. ālayavijñāna, meaning 'storehouse consciousness'), the continuum of momentary instances that is endowed with habitual tendencies and flows in an extremely subtle manner, various views of non-Buddhists, such as the view of self, arise, and one also doubts the path to liberation. Why is this? Because this alaya-vijñana is the place where limitless habitual tendencies of virtuous and non-virtuous actions reside, so the habitual tendencies stored in the alaya-vijñana are also limitless. Therefore, one cannot definitively assert that these habitual tendencies will not exist. The conditions that ripen the habitual tendencies that serve as causes and awaken them into the nature of effects are also diverse. For example, virtue awakens the habitual tendencies to be reborn in higher realms, while afflictions and non-virtue awaken the habitual tendencies to be reborn in lower realms. If the cause to be reborn as a human matures, then the habitual tendencies of having been born as a human in a previous life, which were left in the alaya-vijñana, will mature, and one will take a human body in this life. If other causes to be born as a god, etc., mature, then other habitual tendencies that cause one to be born as a god, etc., will awaken. Because one does not see the power of transforming from a previous existence to another, one generates the evil thought that Brahma, etc., are the creators of the world, and by the path established in this way, even subtle suffering cannot be pacified, and one will not be liberated from the three realms. Turning away from the path of yoga that realizes the true meaning, and being led astray by inverted conceptualizations, and the reason for doubting that path, is also because one does not realize that the continuum of the alaya-vijñana flows in an extremely subtle manner. This is like mistaking a rope for a snake, or having doubts. The fault of not realizing is that, by clinging to 'self', one completely obscures one's own mind-stream, and is contrary to the lineage of noble ones who do not cling to 'self', and one cannot transcend the state of an ordinary being. Because one engages in various actions of clinging to phenomena, one performs various actions, and various sufferings arise, and by non-virtuous actions, the three lower realms are perpetuated. The third part is divided into two aspects: the actual statement and the reasoning. First, the various consciousnesses are also because, with respect to the continuum of aggregates of form, sound, etc., one clings to the distinct characteristics of each, so because there are eight objects of knowledge, and because of the differences in functions such as seeing, the consciousnesses appear as eight aggregates, but in reality, the nature of knowing and awareness is the same. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are no multiplicities in nature. Because there are no multiplicities in the mind, therefore, the first moment of mind, which is the basis for generating everything, the moment of the ālaya-vijñāna (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞི, kun gzhi, Skt: ālayavijñāna, storehouse consciousness), alone possesses the body with all powers and all phenomena without exception. Because of attachment and clinging to those previous ones, the subsequent wisdom arises like the previous ones, and because the habitual tendencies ripen, they appear in various ways. Therefore, the qualities of noble ones and ordinary beings do not exist elsewhere other than from the continuum of one's own mind-moment, because all qualities abide in the mind. The six classes of the six realms, such as gods, and the various subdivisions within them, all appear through the power of the samādhi (Tibetan: ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་, ting nge 'dzin, Skt: samādhi, concentration) that has been cultivated from beginningless time. The second part explains the two reasonable views and refutes the unreasonable views. The first view is: everything is enlightenment, everything is one's own mind, and the continuum of mind neither exists nor does not exist, nor does it exist in any direction such as east. Because it has no direction at all, it cannot be indicated as one, nor can it be indicated as one. Because the mind has no direction at all, it cannot be distinguished. If there is a pure and impure side, it cannot be indicated as the characteristic of one. If someone says that things are non-existent like space, then space also has edges and centers such as east and west, which can be distinguished, but the mind has no direction at all, so it cannot be distinguished. Therefore, the endless realms are all my body, because they are one without attachment, everything is me, and I am everything. Because my body appears as endless realms and the bodies of beings, even if there is no obtainable dharma that was originally possessed, the mind and habitual tendencies are like shape and color, neither one nor different, so it is very difficult to measure. The second view is: if everything is mind, then why does it appear to arise from external causes and conditions? The answer is: all these dharmas arise in dependence on causes and conditions. If the conditions for the cause are complete in the mind, it will arise, and if the conditions for the cause disappear, it will cease. If we examine it from the ultimate point of view, just as a fruit does not arise from a burnt seed, if the cause is not real, then the fruit will not really arise. Therefore, this is a deception. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
