Thus, speaking of things like space, and the two cessations, selective and non-selective. Thus, ‘Samskrta’ (འདུས,Samskrta,梵文,Aggregation), ‘a’ (མ,a,Non-), ‘krta’ (བྱས,krta,Action) these three are considered to be permanent. However, the Vaibhashikas (བྱེ་བྲག་སྨྲ་བ,bye brag smra ba,Specific speaker) of the central region add ‘Tathata’ (དེ་བཞིན་ཉིད,de bzhin nyid,Suchness), considering there to be four ‘non-created’ (འདུས་མ་བྱས,'dus ma byas,Asamskrta). According to them, the nature of dependent origination, possessing characteristics such as non-arising, is itself ‘non-created’, and these four are considered to be substantially existent. Apart from the ‘non-created’, all else is ‘created’ (འདུས་བྱས,'dus byas,Samskrta), arising from the aggregation of causes and conditions, belonging to the five fruits. These schools accept the causes of the past and future, and speak of the three times as distinctions of substance, or because they follow the Great Vaibhasha Shastra, hence the name. Among these, ‘created’ arises from causes and conditions, and the nature of these dharmas is empty, therefore there is no other agent. From actions, actions arise, or they are ‘created’, and these are also considered to be momentary. As it is taught: ‘Actions give rise to various worlds, actions are mind and mental factors, mind is the action of thought, from which arise the actions of body and speech.’ The wisdom arising from the senses such as the eye, neither accumulates particles nor has the function of accumulating particles, therefore, the appearance of objects is direct and uninterrupted cognition. And the appearance of objects is a collection of particles, with intervals. These views are said to possess wisdom surpassing that of the outsiders, and are explained in the Vaibhashika texts of Kashmir in the west, and the views of the Vaibhashikas of the central region are mostly similar, so they are not explained separately. The second view is that the Sautrantikas (མདོ་སྡེ་པ,mdo sde pa,Sutra school) consider that directly seeing forms etc. is not the direct object of the senses, but rather the aggregation of sense, object, and consciousness, which gives rise to consciousness possessing the image of the object. They believe that the entities of objects have no intervals between particles, neither touching nor adhering to each other. For example, when the eye sees an object colored by crystal, it directly sees the crystal, and the color is an image. Therefore, the direct appearance is only the image of consciousness, and the basis of the appearance of color and shape etc. is a hidden external object other than consciousness. Regarding the ‘non-created’, the Sautrantikas believe that ‘space’ is merely a name, it does not exist, like the ‘son of a barren woman’. ‘Cessation’ is also like ‘space’, it is merely imputed, without inherent existence. Similarly, ‘non-associated formations’ are also like this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They also merely consider this to be a speculation. Any material that is assembled is not truly existent. When mind and matter combine, it appears like a mixture of form and consciousness, but in reality, they cannot be distinguished separately. Even when observed simultaneously, matter cannot combine with mind to produce something, because there is no concept of combination between them. For example, like dust and dust, other situations should be inferred similarly. The three times—past, present, and future—they also do not acknowledge as truly existent. If consciousness arises with an image, then what is the difference between this and the Cittamatra (Mind-Only) school? The difference is that they believe that apart from consciousness, there exists form composed of aggregates of atoms, and even if it is hidden, it is not non-existent. These people accept the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra (The Sutra on the Foundations of Mindfulness) and the Bhadrakalpika Sūtra (The Sutra of the Fortunate Aeon) and other sutras as they are, and follow the teachings of these sutras, therefore they are called Sautrāntikas (Sutra Followers). They are skilled in illustrating with examples, so they are also called Dṛṣṭāntikas (Exemplifiers). They believe that Śrāvakas (Hearers) who have been liberated from Nirvana through dedicating merit to unsurpassed Bodhi and making aspirations will revive after eighty thousand kalpas, therefore they are wise. The Vaibhāṣikas (Particularists) believe that in the realm of peace, countless billions of kalpas will pass, because it is said in the scriptures: 'Having obtained the body of Samadhi, one will not awaken until the end of the kalpa.' Therefore, the Sautrāntikas are wiser than the Vaibhāṣikas. Third, to explain the view of the Yogācāra (Practice of Yoga) school: A whole composed of aggregated atoms does not exist, and the fundamental atoms that compose it also do not exist. Why? Because if six atoms combine simultaneously, then the atom will split into six parts. If these six parts occupy the same position, then the whole will become as small as an atom. Such arguments create contradictions. The different characteristics observed separately, such as hardness, liquid, warmth, etc., if analyzed with reason, will be found to be impossible to determine separately. For example: 'For the same woman's body, dogs full of desire will think of it as meat, as an object of desire, as food, thus producing three different cognitions.' And 'Because the same thing produces different cognitions in different minds, it is believed that things are not truly existent.' Therefore, the various realms experienced are like dreams, and it is only consciousness that appears in different ways. Even so, they believe that there exists a consciousness that is liberated from the grasper and the grasped, which is the true meaning.
