As it is said in the scriptures: 'Like the discriminations of children, external objects do not exist; the mind, disturbed by habitual tendencies, appears as objects.' This is to abandon attachment to external objects, and it is the view of the Mind-Only school or the Yogacara school. As it is said in the scriptures: 'Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind, and the three times are also only mind.' This is in accordance with the meaning of the scriptures. Among them, the aspectarians, such as Acharya Dignāga, advocate the six consciousnesses; the non-aspectarians, such as Arya Asanga, believe that 'If objects truly exist, then non-conceptual wisdom would not be established; because there are no external objects, it is reasonable to attain Buddhahood.' It also says: 'In the realm of non-conceptual wisdom, because there is no appearance of all external objects, one should understand that external objects are non-existent; because there are no external objects, there is no knowing mind.' They advocate the eight consciousnesses. Some people advocate only the Alaya consciousness, which exists not only in the non-aspectarian school but also in the aspectarian school. The fourth view is that, as mentioned earlier, consciousness cannot be denied by reason, so it is argued that consciousness has the nature of 'reality' or is established. However, this view is not recognized by the Prasangika Madhyamaka, who are proficient in reasoning. Why? Because this 'consciousness', whether 'one' or 'many', is separated from its own nature, just as there is no lotus in the sky. So, what does the Madhyamaka school advocate? They do not advocate anything, neither 'existence' like the realists, nor 'non-existence' like the nihilists. If it is considered to be separate from both 'existence' and 'non-existence', then it would fall into a third state that is neither 'existence' nor 'non-existence'. If so, wouldn't 'existence' and 'non-existence' become one? Not so, because it is not a combination of 'existence' and 'non-existence'. Therefore, it is the Madhyamaka that is liberated from these four extremes, as it is said in the scriptures: 'Those who do not cling to existence, non-existence, or both existence and non-existence, cannot be shaken by even the most severe criticism.' This view is unique to those who are proficient in the true meaning, and is not possessed by other schools. These Madhyamikas are further divided into two ways of establishing conventional truth: those who advocate the existence of external objects, such as Acharya Bhāviveka, and those who advocate Mind-Only, such as Shantarakshita. The following is an exhortation to diligently study the practice: The third part is to exhort diligent study, which is divided into three aspects: the actual meaning, the reason for how to study, and the means of studying. First is the actual meaning, as mentioned earlier. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
