2. First: Two parts, concise explanation and detailed explanation. First, it is explained by one verse such as 'Mantra residing in fire', which explains how to achieve accomplishment through meditation without verbally reciting mantras: Contemplating the mantra residing in fire bestows desired attainments, and Śabda-sthāna bestows meditative yoga. Remembering these two as special methods for achieving desired attainments, focusing on the ultimate of sound bestows liberation. These are the meditations of mantra recitation, called 'the essence of the three'. Second, the detailed explanation, although there are various internal distinctions, is generally summarized, explained from 'arising from non-discrimination' to 'wisdom, peace, and steadfast practice': Consciousness does not discriminate, it arises from mind and mental phenomena. The wise should merge themselves into the non-dual Suchness, or even if not, they should gather consciousness into the heart, and through gathering, all distractions will not arise. Then, the mantra practitioner should abide in the wisdom beyond all branches of self and dualistic elaboration, without appearance, and should not cling to any object of meditation. This is the preliminary to all practices and applies to all times and places. Then, what are the three, such as Śabda-sthāna? The explanation is as follows: The so-called 'sound' refers to the sound of the mantra's letters arranged in a sequence, appearing in the mind of discrimination. The letters of the mantra are connected to each other, one after another, and 'unchanging' means clear appearance and stability. For example, like the sound of a bell, the sound of the mantra's letters continuously arises, focusing the mind on this, the sound of the mantra should be known as the essence of the deity. The sound of the mantra appears in the consciousness, and thinking in the way that consciousness clings to the sound is called the meditation of Śabda-sthāna. Agni-sthāna (Fire abiding) means that in the heart, the sound of the mantra arises from within the fire, and the fire does not cause harm to the seed syllables of the mantra, etc., but is peaceful. The words of the mantra are complete without missing or adding, and each sound is clear and complete, possessing such branches. Gathering breath and effort inward, becoming a yogi abiding in the Suchness of self, sleep, etc., will weaken (meditation). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One should focus on tranquility (rmugs spangs nas ni), and contemplate with one-pointedness. To further clarify this, it is said in the scripture: 'The subtle (phra ba ni) that dwells in my (bdag gi) heart (snying gar)...' Because it is a non-conceptual image, untouchable and indivisible, it has no coarse substance. What is it? It is the clear, luminous, and stainless moon disc (dwang zhing 'od gsal ba dri med zla ba'i dkyil 'khor te). Within the moon disc, there is no harm, no pain, and it has a pleasing nature. Therefore, contemplate the tranquil (rab tu zhi ba yi) fire (me) tongue (lce) that is extremely (rab tu) bright (od bzang ba). The unchanging (mi 'gyur ba) mantra syllables (sngags kyi yi ge'i gzhi yig 'bru rnams ni) reside there (der bzhag nas), without the fault of distraction, dwelling in bliss (bde bar 'dug nas). One should contemplate the sound of the mantra residing in the fire (me la gnas pa'i sngags kyi sgra gdangs). 'ma ma' means mud. Like this, contemplate with the mind the sound of the mantra residing in the fire, and perform mental recitation, or in the heart of the deity (or Bodhisattva), the unchanging (mi 'gyur ba) nature of Bodhicitta (byang chub sems), place the mantra syllables (sngags kyi yi ge) on the moon disc (zla dkyil), do not contemplate the form, but only contemplate the sound of the mantra (sngags kyi sgra nyid 'ba' zhig bsam par bya'o). Without uttering a sound, merely focusing on the sound of the mantra (sngags kyi sgra la dmigs pa'i bsam gtan ni) in meditation ('ba' zhig byas pa nyid kyis kyang), the practitioner (sgrub pa'i skyes bus) can attain all the excellent qualities (gnas pa dam pa'i dpal te dpal bzang po ji snyed yod pa de rnams) that dwell in all sentient and insentient things (lha dang mi sogs brtan gyo'i dngos po kun), whether male or female. This is a summary of accomplishing all desires. Like this, by controlling the breath and practicing the meditation of dwelling in fire, signs such as hunger will appear, and great purification will be attained. To obtain the fruit that one desires, one should strive diligently. This kind of recitation meditation is a particularly excellent instruction. If one possesses this method, like a horse with the mind as its mount, binding both the wind and the rider—the mind—together, through the recitation meditation of controlling the breath, one can quickly achieve accomplishment, which other recitations cannot do. This recitation with four branches is a special means of taking the form of the deity, mantra, and Suchness as the path, and can quickly attain accomplishment and quickly generate realization of the path. The meditation of dwelling in fire and sound can increase the power of the mantra, so it should be practiced as much as possible in each session. The third is the contemplation of the end of sound. The end of sound refers to the place where sound ceases, and the place of cessation is the naturally pure (rang bzhin rna). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
