The Lord said, 'The method of focusing is to think of the shape of the letters in front and focus on the tone of the sound.' Focus on the letters, about like a moon; focus on the moon, about like the body of the Tathagata; focus on that, clearly visualize it as your own deity's body. In the heart of that deity, the sound, the letters, the moon, the deity's body, and the non-discriminating essence—the wisdom body, the signless Dharmakaya—the Dharmadhatu, with no object of focus, gradually focus, abandoning the former, and remain for a moment in a state free from elaboration. From that state, as an ordinary self, arise from the form of abiding in the body of karmic maturation, observe and rest in the manner of illusion, etc. In short, as long as the recitation is done, it must be recited with meditation. Therefore, the mind's non-discriminating nature, the Bodhicitta appearing as a stainless moon mandala, focusing on this is very familiar, giving rise to a clear appearance, and not shaking or changing, this is the meditation on the garland of secret mantras. Meditating on the heart of the Buddha's body, which is meditated in front as the basis for bestowing accomplishments, is the basis for receiving accomplishments from the Buddha's body; meditating on the heart of one's own deity's body is also the same. Because the garland of secret mantras of one's own deity is the basis for where they abide and are placed, therefore, wherever the form of the moon mandala is contemplated, one should earnestly contemplate the nature of the mind—the completely pure Bodhicitta.' These verses show that one should focus on placing the moon and mantra garland in the heart of both oneself and the deity in front. Moreover, it must be done diligently without distraction, so the eyes, etc. All the winds that move through the gates of the senses should be gathered back into one's own body with the mind, not scattering outwards, and controlled without moving. The life force and the activity of the mind, and the flow of thought, should both be gathered together without moving. The mind, knowing the way of secret mantras and applying the letters of the mantra with intelligence without distraction, should be joined together. In this way, the winds of entering and exiting, the activities of the senses, and the various thoughts of the mind should be gathered together without scattering to one point. For that state, the recitation of sounds in the mouth will not come, so only the recitation of the mind should be undertaken. Gathering the life force and activity, etc., this itself is inseparable from the ritual. Or, in a slightly relaxed manner --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although chanting aloud is permissible, mental recitation is superior. Therefore, those who desire mantra accomplishment should adhere to the aforementioned method and not chant aloud in any other way. In short, restrain the breath and do not let consciousness scatter from the sense gates. Close the eyes slightly, relax a bit, and focus single-mindedly on the three bases in front. Occasionally exhale through the nose, visualizing oneself as the deity. Do this until the recitation is complete. When exhaling, focus on the moon disc and mantra garland in the heart of the deity in front, without change. When inhaling, focus primarily on the three within oneself, alternating in this way. Remaining in this state is called purification of mind, that is, purification without afflictions such as greed, and because the object of focus is clear and without impurities, abide in such purity. When the recitation is finished, let oneself rest as described earlier. The great teacher Sangye Sangwa said, 'Visualize the deity in front as slightly taller than your own height.' Summary Second, summarizing the essentials. Summarized in one verse such as 'The nature of mantra': The very nature of mantra, the order of meditating as six deities, without remainder. The very nature of oneself, self-nature unestablished, only appearance, the body of the deity, the nature of self-aware luminosity, ritual. The very nature of recitation, possessing four branches. If one knows these three well, the mantra practitioner will surely attain accomplishment, without doubt. Explaining the Truth of Recitation Separately Second, explaining the branches of recitation separately. Dividing into explaining the very nature of recitation in three ways, and the method of proximity to mantra, etc. Explaining the Three Essentials of Mantra Recitation First, dividing into two: 1. Indicating the place of recitation; 2. Explaining the key points of the meditation of recitation. First, indicating with one verse such as 'Secluded garden': The place of recitation, in a secluded garden, riverbank, mountain cave, mountaintop, forest, etc., places possessing qualities. Ordained ones and those who rely on mantra practice, relying on discipline, mantra practitioners who bind their minds with vows, should practice the meditation of recitation and abide. Second, dividing into the main practice and branches. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
