Six consciousnesses and other six qualities, four immeasurable minds such as loving-kindness, four fruits such as the Stream-enterer fruit, and having entered the path of accumulation and other transcendent paths. If someone says, 'I have attained these qualities,' this is a lie spoken for the sake of benefit, a special kind of attainment of qualities. Such a person, if they speak without arrogance, as if they have not attained these qualities, while maintaining clear awareness, they will not violate the root vow. In the past, a renunciate lived in a monastery. He subdued his afflictions through worldly paths, preventing them from arising. Later, thinking that afflictions would not arise again, he thought and said, 'I have abandoned afflictions.' But when he returned to the city, seeing women and enemies, afflictions arose again. He asked the Buddha, 'Have I spoken a lie about superior Dharma?' The Buddha said, 'Except for those with arrogance, even if one attains such qualities in the future, one should not speak of it.' Furthermore, if a renunciate conceals their abilities and claims to see gods, nagas, etc., when they do not, this is a great lie. If they say, 'Non-humans do not harm noble ones, and they will not harm me either,' this is violating the root vow, etc. The second part discusses abandoning false speech and other non-virtuous speech, teaching the four qualities of a renunciate to be adopted, and advising that other faults of speech not mentioned here should also be abandoned. First: Consistent with the above, apart from claiming to have attained special qualities, any other false words, whatever is said, will increase much non-virtue and sin, leading to falling into the three lower realms and experiencing suffering. Just as people who were originally harmonious and friendly become enemies and separate due to hatred, etc., gossiping words, whether true or false, should not be spread. Without a necessary purpose, one should not speak idle talk, jokes, etc., in gatherings, nor should one speak harsh words that hurt others. The second part is that for insults such as 'one who eats the flesh of their parents,' or being slandered due to lineage, etc., one should not respond with evil words; for harsh rebukes, one should not respond with harsh words; for accusations or exposing faults, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone retaliates against abuse with a stick or stone, or retaliates against beatings, then one must accept these four codes of conduct in order to become a practitioner. The third is that a person with wisdom and knowledge, who desires to learn or cherish and protect the precepts, must diligently avoid the verbal faults of speaking about kings, robbers, commerce, and so on. Having recognized that these faults will bring about undesirable consequences, one should strictly restrain one's speech. The second part is about the subtle precepts. It includes the limb of mindfulness, the limb of asceticism, the root of non-accumulation—avoiding the acceptance of gold and silver, and other forms of what to avoid and accept that are not included therein. First, the specifics of intoxicants are explained, and the necessity of avoiding them. The first point is that beer made from fermented grains, and various drinks, including grain alcohol itself, liquor made from tree trunks, honey wine, liquor made from flowers, and juice made from fruits such as grapes are all concocted liquors. Having recognized that both grain alcohol and concocted liquors cause intoxication, a precept holder who cherishes himself and desires benefit should not drink even a little bit. The second point is that if one drinks alcohol, one will forget the precepts that should be accepted and avoided, lose mindfulness, and thereby become unrestrained. Once one becomes unrestrained, asceticism will be lost. For example, in the past there was a small lay devotee, and in order to play a joke, someone brought a jar of alcohol, a sheep, and a woman, and said to him, 'You must do one of three things: drink alcohol, kill the sheep, or have intercourse with the woman.' He thought that drinking alcohol was better than the other two, so he drank the alcohol. As a result, he became intoxicated and unrestrained, killed the sheep, and had intercourse with the woman, ultimately breaking the fundamental precept and completely losing his vows. Therefore, those who hold me as their teacher should not drink or feed even a drop of alcohol. If they drink it, that person cannot be my Shravaka disciple, and I am not his teacher.' Remembering the Buddha's teachings, like this, drinking intoxicants not only brings about faults, but also increases many faults. Therefore, alcohol, like a dewdrop on a blade of grass, should be avoided. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
