Mūlasarvāstivāda Śrāmaṇera Vinaya Commentary · The Jewel Garland Preface to the Treatise ༄༅། །Mūlasarvāstivāda Śrāmaṇera Vinaya Commentary · The Jewel Garland ༄༅༅། །Oṃ Svasti! To the wise who opens the path Of the basis of qualities, the foundation of individual liberation, I pay homage. To introduce novices to the precepts, I will compose this Jewel Garland commentary. Here, to clearly show the practices of a novice, the distinctions of what to abandon and adopt in relation to time and objects, I will explain these fifty verses. There are four parts: the meaning of the title, the homage in the translation, the meaning of the text, and the meaning of the conclusion. First, in Indian language (Sanskrit): Arya-mula-sarva-apti-vada-shramane-ra-karika. In Tibetan: ཉོན་མོངས་ལས་རིང་དུ་འཕ༷གས་པ༷་ (far from afflictions) ཤེས་བྱ་གཞི༷་ལྔའམ་དུས་གསུམ་པོ་ཐ༷མས་ཅ༷ད་ཡོ༷ད་པ༷ར་སྨྲ༷་བ༷འི་ (those who say that the five bases of knowledge or all three times exist) བླ་མའི་བྱ་བ་དང་ཁ་ཏོན་སོགས་ལ་བརྩོན་ཞིང་ངལ་བས་དགེ༷་ཚུལ༷་གྱི༷་ཚིག༷་ལེ༷འུ༷ར་བྱས༷་པ༷་ (verses on the precepts of a novice who diligently engages in the activities of the guru and recitations, etc.). Second, I pay homage to the Buddha, who knows all the subtle details of cause and effect in accordance with the Vinaya! This was done by the translator. Third, there are two parts: the preliminary parts of engaging in the composition of the treatise, and the actual nature of the treatise to be composed. The first has two parts: offering praise and making a pledge. First, protecting from the suffering of bad migrations and samsara, མགོ༷ན་པོ༷་ (Protector) and ཇི་ལྟ་ཇི་སྙེད་ཀྱི་ཤེས་བྱ་ཐ༷མས་ཅ༷ད་མཁྱེ༷ན་པ་ (knowing all that exists and how it exists), that is, the Buddha who has perfected the two benefits, and the Dharma of scripture and realization, and the Sangha of noble ones, including those in training and those beyond training, I pay homage! This is the offering of praise. Second, the actions of abandoning and adopting of a novice, collected from the ocean-like scriptures, I will briefly explain according to the meaning of the scriptures, this is the pledge. Main Text of the Treatise Second, there are two parts: advising that those who have gone forth must keep the precepts, and explaining in detail how to keep them. Teaching that those who have gone forth must keep the precepts The Śākya (Śākya, the Able One) clan, and the teachings of the lion (Senge, སེ༷ངྒེ༷, Lion) who subdues the heretics, afflictions, and opponents, having faith in the four truths and karma, etc., shaving their hair and beards, wearing saffron robes, going forth from home to homelessness, this shows the four perfections of going forth: having faith is the perfection of intention, shaving hair and beards, wearing saffron robes is the perfection of discipline, going forth from home to homelessness --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extensive Explanation of How to Uphold Discipline: 'Being in a place' means being complete in location, and 'ordination' is shown as being complete in virtue. Accomplishment of practice: Abandoning the four defeats by their very nature, and the six including alcohol. With reverence and constancy, the three doors of body, speech, and mind are firmly maintained, and with mindfulness and awareness, diligently guarding against even the slightest faults arising. Just as protecting a tree from damage involves encircling it with a fence and ropes, preventing fundamental transgressions requires maintaining the minor precepts like fences and ropes to ensure the stability of moral discipline. Just as one avoids what is contrary and embraces what is conducive to one's own body, so too should one guard the precepts. The Second Part: Divided into several aspects: What to do in the morning; what to do after the meal; continuously explaining the places of learning; what to do in the afternoon and thereafter; concluding by stating the fruits of these actions. The First Part: Dividing the night into five parts, waking from sleep at dawn, reciting sutras and so forth before daybreak, and dedicating the merit to all sentient beings. With water free of living creatures and a toothbrush, cleanse the dirt from the face and teeth. To the Buddha who has perfected abandonment and realization, awakened from the sleep of ignorance, and whose wisdom is vast, pay homage with body, speech, and mind, and perform other Dharma practices. Then, knock on the door of the abbot or the resident teacher (Lama) with a gentle gesture, and open the door. Upon entering, respectfully prostrate to the Lama, and inquire whether the elements of earth and so on are in harmony, whether they are comfortable or uncomfortable, whether they slept well at night or not, whether they had dreams, and whether there were any interruptions to their contemplation. Then, prostrate to the stupa and circumambulate it. Except for urinating and defecating, ask what is appropriate to do in the morning, and if permitted, diligently prepare for offerings such as offering platforms, mandalas, flowers, and incense. Water should be examined in a clear vessel such as a water strainer or a water bowl. First the top, then the middle, and then the bottom should be examined in order. If those such as water strainers are not available, it can be examined in the palms of the hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
