Similarly, to someone afflicted by illness, it is like advising them, 'The longer you live, the more you suffer, so you might as well end your own life.' If one hears such things, those who are exhausted by suffering, at that time, one should not say things like 'You will surely die.' If one says it and they die because of it, it is a defeat. A case of being killed by medicine: A son named Stobsde (householder, literally: collection of strength), his older brother was called Sdeba (literally: leader of the army), and the younger brother was called Nyesde (literally: close army). After Sdeba went to trade, Nyesde had an affair with his wife and she became pregnant. Later, Nyesde became a monk in Jeta-vana Nyesde's friend, a doctor, aborted the pregnancy, and this became widely known. The Buddha asked Nyesde, 'Did you do such a thing?' A monk should not do such a thing, not even rejoice in it. The Blessed One stipulated that from now on, if one does such a thing, one will commit a downfall, so it should not be done. A Bhikshu, with the intention to kill, mixes poison in food or drink, or gives medicine that causes death, or uses spells prepared by Lhapo (lha phos, gods), or uses mantras prepared by Mo (mos, goddesses), or throws someone off a cliff, into fire, or throws them to wild animals, poisonous snakes, etc., places that lead to death, or instructs others, or uses various means of body and speech. In short, from the motivation, action to the final result, if one kills a person, one will lose the precepts and commit a downfall. The second part, concerning the ancillary circumstances. It is divided into two types: gross offenses and minor offenses. The first type: For those of the same kind, or ancillary animals such as cows, or hell beings (including hot hells, cold hells, solitary hells, and near-border hells), or beings of the hungry ghost realm, or even gods of the desire realm and form realm, if a Bhikshu kills them with the intention to kill, they will fall into the evil realms and commit a gross offense. The second type: A Bhikshu who holds the precepts, if they want to kill other beings, or have the intention to kill, or throw stones etc. with their body, or say with their speech 'Kill him' etc., if that person does not die but is only injured, then three unpleasant things will arise from body, speech, and mind. If there is no intention to kill, but only because of anger, repeatedly hitting other beings with stones, sticks, fists, etc., or slapping with the palm, or whipping, or throwing them into hot places when it is hot, cold places when it is cold, etc., causing harm, or trampling with horses and cows. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We should not impose burdens or inflict beatings, etc., on others. A *bhikshu* (monk) should not ride horses, elephants, etc., nor should they travel by riding them. Secondly, regarding the *parajika* (defeat) of taking what is not given: it is divided into three parts: stating the *parajika* itself, pointing out the offenses, and explaining the basis and modes of utilizing these actions. First part: The *Bhagavan* (Blessed One) was residing in Rajagrha (Royal City) in the Kalandaka Venuvana (Bamboo Grove). At that time, a *bhikshu* named Dhanapala (Wealth Protector), who was formerly a potter, built a hut in the monastery of Rajagrha. When he went to the city for alms, cowherds and others demolished his hut and took away the grass and wood. After building and demolishing it many times, he thought, 'This is troublesome,' and built a beautiful hut of clay. At that time, the *Bhagavan*, with his divine eye, saw this and asked, 'Whose hut is this?' It was answered, 'It is Dhanapala's.' The *Bhagavan* said, 'Because of this kind of behavior, the *tirthikas* (non-Buddhists) will mock me, destroy it!' The *bhikshus* then destroyed it. Then Dhanapala thought, 'I am friendly with the forest warden of Rajagrha, I will build a wooden house.' So he gave the forest warden some bribes, saying, 'Please give me some wood.' The forest warden said, 'Since you have given me bribes, use it as you please.' At that time, Rajagrha was being repaired, and wood was needed. The forest warden cut down and carried away undamaged wood. The city guard saw this and told King Ajatashatru. King Ajatashatru summoned Dhanapala and asked, 'Is it permissible for you to take wood without permission?' Dhanapala replied, 'Although it is not permissible, he gave me bribes.' The king asked, 'When did he give it?' Dhanapala said, 'When my father crowned you king, he proclaimed loudly: In my kingdom, *bhikshus* and *brahmins* (priests) may freely use grass, wood, and water without permission.' The king said, 'That refers to what is unowned, not what is already owned.' The king asked, 'Is the king's permission needed for what is unowned?' The king was very angry and scolded, 'A *bhikshu* who takes what is not given should be killed, do not do that again!' Then he let him go. Thus, the Buddha heard of this matter, scolded him in various ways, and established the precepts. If a *bhikshu*, either himself or instructing others, with a thieving mind rather than a pure mind, through blatant force, secret intrusion, deception, etc., without confused perception, steals gold from another person's territory... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
