Wealth is the root of suffering, as it leads to rebirth in the three lower realms in the next life, and it also obscures liberation from suffering, as there is no opportunity to attain liberation. The fourth is the defeat of lying, which is divided into the actual defeat and other verbal offenses. First, the Bhagavan (usually referring to the Buddha) was residing near the Monkey Pool in the vast city of Vaishali. At that time, there was a great famine, and parents would not even give food to their children. The monks and elders with magical powers went to other prosperous places, such as Uttarakuru, and they themselves were also supported. There, five hundred monks who had ordained from fishermen did not attain magical powers, and because they had little learning, they could not do so. They thought, 'We should each proclaim our own merits to obtain offerings.' So they proclaimed each other's merits, saying, 'This one has attained the fruit of Stream-entry (Sotapanna),' and so on, the four fruits, 'This one has achieved the fruit of the worldly path,' 'This one is proficient in the Tripitaka,' and so on, thereby obtaining food and becoming strong. Later, after the summer had passed, they returned to pay homage to the Bhagavan. First, they met Ananda, who asked them, 'Other monks have become weak due to lack of food, why are you so robust?' They answered truthfully. 'Did you say this because you have these qualities, or because you do not have these qualities?' 'We said it even though we did not have them.' The monks said that it was not appropriate to do so, and the Buddha heard this, rebuked them in various ways, and established the precepts. 'I have directly seen the form of the Devas,' 'I have directly heard the voice of that Deva,' 'I and the Devas have conversed with each other,' whichever of these three statements is made will lead to defeat. Similarly, 'Wherever I dwell, the Devas come, and I also go to the abode of that Deva,' is also the same. Similarly, 'Gandharva, Kumbhanda, Naga, Yaksa, Preta, Rakshasa, Pisaca, and animals with human attachments,' whether it is said that their forms have been seen, or using 'etc.' including hearing their voices, conversing with them, they come to my abode, I go to their abode, whichever is said will lead to defeat. From the perspective of essence, the four Dhyanas, such as the first Dhyana, and the attainment of the Divyacaksu (divine eye)... ས་པ༷་ནི་སྡུག༷་བསྔལ༷་བ་ཡི༷ན་ཏེ། (sa pa ni dug ngal ba yin te, Wealth is the root of suffering,) དེས་མྱ༷་ང༷ན་ལས་འད༷ས་པ་ལ༷འ༷ང་སྒྲིབ༷་པ༷ར་འགྱུར༷་ཏེ། (des mya ngan las 'das pa la'ang sgrib par 'gyur te, it also obscures liberation from suffering,) ལྷ༷་ད༷ག་གི་གཟུགས་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་མཐོ༷ང་ངོ་ཞེ༷ས་དང་། (lha dag gi gzugs mngon sum du mthong ngo zhes dang, I have directly seen the form of the Devas,) ལྷ་དེ༷་ཡི༷་ངག་གི་སྒྲ༷་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་ཐོས༷་པ༷ར་གྱུར༷་ཏོ་ཞེས་ད༷ང་། (lha de yi ngag gi sgra mngon sum du thos par gyur to zhes dang, I have directly heard the voice of that Deva,) ལྷ་དག་དང་བདག་ཕན་ཚུན་ཀུན༷་ཏུ་གཏམ་སྨྲས༷་སོ་ཞེས་དེ་གསུམ་གང་སྨྲས་ཀྱང་ཕམ་པར་འགྱུར་བ་ད༷ང་། (lha dag dang bdag phan tshun kun tu gtam smras so zhes de gsum gang smras kyang pham par 'gyur ba dang, I and the Devas have conversed with each other, whichever of these three statements is made will lead to defeat.) ག༷ང་ན༷་བད༷ག་འདུ༷ག་པ།དེར་ལྷ༷་རྣམས་འོ༷ང་ཞི༷ང་། བད༷ག་ཀྱང༷་ལྷ༷་དེ༷་ཡི༷་དྲུང༷་དུ་འགྲོ༷འོ་ཞེས་དང་། (gang na bdag 'dug pa, der lha rnams 'ong zhing, bdag kyang lha de yi drung du 'gro'o zhes dang, Wherever I dwell, the Devas come, and I also go to the abode of that Deva,) དྲི༷་ཟ༷་དང་། བུམ་སྣ་སྣམ་སོགས་གྲུལ༷་བུམ༷་དང་། དུང་སྐྱོང་སོགས་ཀླུ་དང་། རྣམ་ཐོས་བུ་སོགས་གནོ༷ད་སྦྱིན༷་དང་། ལྟོ༷་འ༷ཕྱེ་ཆེ༷ན་པོ༷་ད༷ང་། ཤ༷་ཟ༷་དང་ཡི༷་དྭ༷གས་དང་། དུད་འགྲོ་མིའི་རྟེན་ཅན་མི༷འ༷མ་ཅི༷་སྟེ་དེ་དང་དེའི་གཟུགས་མཐོ༷ང་ངོ༷་ཞེ༷ས་དང་། (dri za dang, bum sna snam sogs grul bum dang, dung skyong sogs klu dang, rnam thos bu sogs gnod sbyin dang, lto 'phye chen po dang, sha za dang yi dwags dang, dud 'gro mi'i rten can mi'am ci ste de dang de'i gzugs mthong ngo zhes dang, Gandharva, Kumbhanda, Naga, Yaksa, Preta, Rakshasa, Pisaca, and animals with human attachments, whether it is said that their forms have been seen,) སྒྲ་ཐོས་སོ། །དེ་དང་གཏམ་སྨྲ༷ས་སོ། །དེ་དག་བདག་གི་དྲུང་དུ་འོང་། བདག་ཀྱང་དེ་དག་གི་དྲུང་དུ་སོང་ངོ་ཞེས་གང་སྨྲས་ཀྱང་ཕམ་པར་འགྱུར་བ་ད༷ང་། (sgra thos so, de dang gtam smras so, de dag bdag gi drung du 'ong, bdag kyang de dag gi drung du song ngo zhes gang smras kyang pham par 'gyur ba dang, hearing their voices, conversing with them, they come to my abode, I go to their abode, whichever is said will lead to defeat.) ངོ་བོའི་སྒོ་ནས་བས༷མ་ག༷ཏན་དང་པོ་སོགས་བཞི་དང་། (ngo bo'i sgo nas bsam gtan dang po sogs bzhi dang, From the perspective of essence, the four Dhyanas, such as the first Dhyana,) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
