and related, becoming the sole support, possessing five characteristics. Only that which possesses five characteristics can be established as the basis for seeds. What are the five characteristics? Stability, like sesame seeds and so on, it needs to be a continuous stream; unstable things like sound and lightning are not suitable as the basis for seeds, because we do not want impressions to form on them, and even if they do, it would be in vain. This shows that the seven consciousnesses and form cannot be the basis for seeds. Because, as it is said: When the consciousness of mind arises, it is always either unconscious, or in two kinds of meditative absorption, or in unconscious sleep, except for fainting. And, it is not in the path of transcendence, nor is it in the meditative absorption of cessation. As it appears, because the stream is cut off, and also because form does not exist as becoming formless. If that is the case, then the alaya consciousness cannot be the basis for seeds either, because it ceases from the state of an Arhat. As it is said, because the stream is cut off. If you ask, there is no fault, because as long as the seed activator exists, the stream will not be cut off, so it is acceptable. That which is not indicated is like garlic and sandalwood, whose smells are not the same, and cannot be sown in all seeds, but like sesame seeds, whose smells are the same, so it is able to. That which is not indicated like the same smell, is because it is not very obvious and there is no incompatibility with virtuous and non-virtuous minds. This shows that virtue and afflictions cannot be the basis for seeds. That which is to be sown is that which is able to be sown, that is, it can be sown on impermanent things, but not on permanent things, thus showing that the unconditioned cannot be the basis for seeds. Being related to the seed activator is that it needs to have a relationship with the seed activator and the seed base arising and ceasing at the same time. This shows that dharmas of different streams and different times cannot be the sown and the seed activator. Solely becoming the support is that it is not in many ways, but solely becoming the support. This excludes the retinue of the alaya consciousness, such as contact, from being the basis for seeds, because they mainly rely on the mind, the alaya consciousness, so they are not solely dependent. So, are these seeds of contact and so on, which are established by their own nature, sown on the alaya consciousness or not? If it is like the first case, then there will be a seed activator other than the seven consciousnesses. If it is like the second case, then

These would become causeless. If so, because this would become causeless, it is necessary to guard, and, those are not guarded because they are very unclear avyākr̥ta. However, since it is the vipāka of previous karma, it is projected until death, so it is considered to enter, although two are said, the latter is better, otherwise, the ālaya itself would also need to be guarded, so it would become the fault of not finding an object to be guarded. So, how many divisions are there for such saṃskāras? There are six divisions, three divisions, four divisions divided into two groups, and four. The first is the six divisions: outer, inner, and unclear, two and saṃvṛtisatya, and paramārthasatya, all of those are considered to be six kinds of seeds. The outer seed is like barley and the root of the blue lotus. The inner seed is part of the seed of the ālaya. The two unclear ones are: unclear is avyākr̥ta, for that: it is the unclear of all-pervasive affliction and purification, or, the two of virtue and non-virtue are unclear. The two are the outer seed and the inner seed. According to the system of some commentators on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, if it is recited as "unclear in two," then, if one examines all-pervasive affliction and purification, or virtue and non-virtue, then those are unclear anywhere, they are avyākr̥ta. Or, the so-called "two" refers to the fact that the ālaya-vijñāna itself has the seeds of afflicted dharmas, so all-pervasive afflicted dharmas arise, so those become cause and effect, and, the seeds of pure dharmas also exist, or, because it has made the object of support, so those become cause and effect. Like that, in the Don Sang, it also says: "The so-called two unclear ones refer to the fact that the two of virtue and non-virtue, or the two of all-pervasive affliction and purification, are unclear and completely unclear, it is the term called avyākr̥ta." Some say that they recite "in two," meaning that if one examines the seeds as the two of virtue and non-virtue, or if one examines as the two of all-pervasive affliction or purification, then it is unclear, it is the meaning of avyākr̥ta. For that, the outer seed is avyākr̥ta, because it is avyākr̥ta itself, it is unclear. The inner one is also unclear because the svabhāva of virtue etc. is not observed. Like that, in the Shé Gyar it also says: unclear.
