Because it does not exist, it is merely imputed. Therefore, on the object that appears as real, like the self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城體:ātman,梵文羅馬擬音:ātman,漢語字面意思:self) and the lord (藏文:གཙོ་བོ་,梵文天城體:īśvara,梵文羅馬擬音:īśvara,漢語字面意思:lord) etc. as conceived by the tirthikas, and the atoms as conceived by the lower schools of our own tradition, these are not established, because they should not appear, and are refuted by the reasoning of grasper and grasped, but because experience is apprehended as substance, it is the internal consciousness itself that appears in that way, and it is imputed by the mind. As it is said in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle: "These consciousnesses encompass all realms, beings, and birthplaces, and show the imputed nature of other-powered characteristics that are not truly correct. The mere consciousness of these consciousnesses is not encompassed by the imputed nature that is not truly correct. The place where the appearance of erroneous objects is, that is the nature of other-power. What is the nature of imputation? That which is meaningless, yet mere consciousness appears as real. What is the nature of perfect accomplishment? That in which the nature of other-power, the nature of reality is completely non-existent." And it is said: "These consciousnesses are mere consciousness because they are meaningless, what example is there for this? Dreams and so on should be seen as examples. For example, in a dream, even though there is no meaning, only consciousness appears as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and houses, forests, lands, mountains, and so on, in various forms of objects, but there is no meaning there. Through this example, it should be understood that everything is mere consciousness. By mentioning 'etc.', it should be understood that illusions, eye defects, and dizziness can be taken as examples." So it is said. Third, the division of the first of the four sets is: common and uncommon, with feeling and without feeling, four seeds. Among them, the common seed is: the seed for the formation of the container world on the basis of the alaya consciousness. The uncommon seed is: the seed for the formation of the sentient world. These two are also called the seed that produces without feeling and the seed that produces with feeling, respectively, because the container is not grasped by the mind, so it does not appear as the basis of pleasure and pain, while the sentient world is the opposite of this. As it is said, among them, by the characteristic of

What is the detailed classification? It refers to the common characteristic, the uncommon characteristic, the characteristic of seeds that produce non-sentient things, and the characteristic of seeds that produce sentient beings. The common one refers to the seeds of the container world. The uncommon one refers to the seeds of each individual place of birth. Whatever is common is the seed that produces non-sentient things. Whatever is uncommon is the seed that produces sentient beings. Thus it is said. Fourth, the second classification within the four categories is: afflictive abode, extremely tamed, already used, and not yet used. Among these, the seeds of the afflictive abode are the seeds of root afflictions such as desire and hatred, and the seeds of near afflictions such as anger and resentment. The seeds of the extremely tamed are the seeds of worldly virtuous dharmas. The seeds of the already used are those seeds of virtue and non-virtue that have already ripened into the nature of the fruition of good and bad destinies, just like cooked food, they will not ripen again. The seeds of the not yet used are the habitual tendencies of manifestation, which arise from beginningless time, because sentient beings, as soon as they are born, without special effort, have various elaborations of grasping and being grasped entering their continuum. Thus it is said: Also, there are the characteristics of the afflictive abode and the characteristics of the extremely tamed. The characteristic of the afflictive abode is whatever is the seed of afflictions and near afflictions. The characteristic of the extremely tamed is whatever is the seed of virtuous dharmas with outflows. It is also said: Also, there are the characteristics of the already used and the not yet used. The characteristic of the already used is that whatever is the fruition of the seeds of virtue and non-virtue has already ripened. The characteristic of the not yet used is whatever is the seed of the habitual tendencies of manifestation, because elaboration arises from beginningless time, therefore it is a seed. Thus it is said. Therefore, some say that in the Compendium of Mahayana only the two, already used and not yet used, are mentioned, because, just as when sprouts are born in succession, the essence of the seed disappears, the habitual tendencies of the fruition of good and bad destinies have become the nature of fruition.
