If someone asks, how is it that the aggregates and the ālaya-vijñāna and the seven consciousnesses operate together, but do not become multiple continuums? Answer: This is not the same, because the aggregates operate in reliance on one mind, while the seven consciousnesses operate in reliance on one ālaya-vijñāna, and if there were two ālaya-vijñānas, then the two would not rely on each other, because both are stable, autonomous consciousnesses, so the fault remains. So, in what way do the latent impressions exist? Therefore it is said: 'Dependent on the basis, it is that very thing, other than the basis it cannot be said, it exists only as imputed.' Neither one nor different. Therefore, from the consciousness of the basis, it is neither one nor different, but the power of the consciousness exists only as imputed in the nature of latency, as it is said: 'The ālaya-vijñāna, and the seeds of all pervasively afflicted dharmas, are they each independent? Or do they exist in a non-independent way?' To this, with those (seeds) that exist in it, in substance they are neither other nor non-other, although that is the case, but the special ālaya-vijñāna with the power to produce, likewise, for the producer, it is called the all-seeds.' And, in its commentary, the Don-gsang, it says: 'In this way, because faults appear in both aspects, therefore with those (seeds) that exist in it, in substance they are not other' etc., as it is said, 'From the ālaya-vijñāna, not those that can be said to be that and other.' And, again, in its commentary, the Shed-sbyar, it also says: 'With those, in substance they are neither other nor non-other, although that is the case', this is in a way that completely transcends other and non-other, the latent impressions exist in the ālaya-vijñāna, because it is the nature of the difference of power. Latent impression, refers to the difference of power, and power also cannot be said to be the power-holder itself and other. Asking whether those are mutually other or non-other, this is not another way, because it is imputed in reliance on the power-holder as the cause.' Thus explained, so this teacher thinks that power is imputed, the power-holder is substantial, therefore the latent impressions and the ālaya-vijñāna, are not substantially other, nor are they one in reverse, after explaining in this way, thinking that the two are one in substance, other in reverse, this is contrary to the scriptures.
