Virtue is sequentially opposed to non-virtue and the maturation of virtue, because the two are incompatible and are antidotes to each other. If virtue itself is not opposed to the maturation of virtue, and non-virtue itself is not opposed to the maturation of non-virtue, then maturation is not necessarily only neutral. If this were the case, there would be the fault of not being able to eliminate all afflictions. Because maturation continues to arise uninterruptedly in all lifetimes until the end of life, if maturation is virtue, then virtuous thoughts will not cease even for a moment, so there is no opportunity for afflictions to arise, and because there is no arising, there is no obstacle to the previous arising either. If the maturation is non-virtue, then there is no opportunity for the antidote to arise that cuts off the stream of non-virtuous thoughts, and because there is no antidote, all afflictions cannot be eliminated. Furthermore, for a person who has severed the roots of virtue, there are infinite faults such as virtuous thoughts manifesting. Therefore, maturation must be only obscured and neutral. It is said: 'Why is the maturation of virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas called obscured and neutral maturation?' This is because obscured and neutral is not opposed to virtue and non-virtue, while virtue and non-virtue are mutually contradictory. If maturation also becomes virtuous or non-virtuous, then all afflictions cannot be eliminated. Therefore, the consciousness of maturation is obscured and neutral. Also, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it is said that the continuum of the consciousness of maturation is cut off because if the connection of continuity is not realized, it cannot be manifestly accomplished elsewhere. Therefore, maturation must continue until the end of life, so it must arise before death, but the eyes and so on are seen to cease even before death, so they are not the nature of maturation. In the Compendium of Topics, it is also said: 'What is maturation? It is the alaya-consciousness together with its associated factors.' Therefore, only the consciousness that serves as the basis is maturation. These have explained the nature of the basis. The dependent, the nature of the seed alaya, what is it like? The dependent, the seed alaya is:

The object of application as a gate, when tending towards cessation, is the ability to establish. The seven consciousnesses as gates, when they themselves tend towards cessation before the object of application, have the ability to establish the seeds of the three: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Among them, the six consciousnesses establish all three seeds of virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, because they possess all three qualities of virtuous, etc. The afflicted mind and its retinue only apply neutral seeds, because it always abides in the nature of neutral. How are the seven consciousnesses and their retinue determined as gates? The entering consciousnesses and the alaya consciousness themselves are always combined as the entity of the fruit and the entity of the cause, thus the entering consciousnesses act as the dominant condition for the alaya consciousness seeds that nourish the old seeds, and by establishing new seeds, they become the causal condition, as it is said: The two consciousnesses are the condition for each other. In the Sutra of the Abhidharma it says: All dharmas are combined with consciousness, and they are also the same, always combined as the entity of the fruit and the entity of the cause. This is said in terms of simultaneous cause and effect, but if it is in terms of non-simultaneous, it also establishes the seed for the complete maturation of the alaya consciousness in the next life. This is because the support and the gate itself arise and cease together, thus becoming the gate. For example, sesame and oil exist and arise and cease together, so even if there is no flower later, the sesame will still have the fragrance of the flower. As it is said: The entering consciousness is a condition for the alaya consciousness in two ways: in the seen dharma, to fully nourish the seeds; and to make it manifest and accomplished in the next life, through establishing the seeds that are fully held. Therefore, in the seen dharma, how the seeds fully grow, then the virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral that arise depending on the alaya consciousness also arise and cease together with their own support, thus becoming the gate. As it is said. Then, what kind of object of application is needed? The object of application is: instruction, prediction, non-prediction applied, as the gate.
